James Torrey Obituary

James Edward Torrey

Easthampton, MA — James Edward Torrey, 69 passed away unexpectedly at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on October 1, 2022. Born on February 6, 1953 in Northampton, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mary Rose (Routhier) Torrey. He was raised in Easthampton and was a graduate of Easthampton High School. In 1991 James met the love of his life, Robin L (Cummings), and they have been happily married for over 30 years. He started working in 1971 at PCA Northampton where he worked for 42 and a 1/2 years, until his retirement as a supervisor in 2013. During this time, he also worked as a security guard at gate 8 for over 14 years at the Three County Fair. In Jim's retirement, he decided to work part time in security for the Eastworks, the Parks and Rec Department of Easthampton. He also worked as a van driver at Riverside Industries, and served as a crossing guard for Easthampton and Northampton school departments. In his leisure time, he was a bowler, a hunter and he belonged to the pistol league at the Holyoke Revolver Club. He also belonged to the Easthampton fish and game. He enjoyed taking rides with his wife and his dog Scout, at dusk to look for local wildlife. They enjoyed visiting their sister-in-law, Bonnie McAlister in Maine, and also trips to Cape Cod for whale watching. Most recently both Jim and Robin enjoyed going on cruises. James was an avid photographer in his early days. He would shoot weddings, but he always continued on capturing photos that represented his love of nature, taking pictures of scenic landscapes, and also animals.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Robin of Easthampton, his son, William J. Torrey of Easthampton, sister in-law Bonnie McAlister of Maine as well as his brother Lawrence Torrey and his wife, Ann of Belchertown, along with several nieces, nephews and many close coworkers and friends. Jim was predeceased by his sister, Marylee Torrey.

To honor Jim's request, all services were private. The Boucher – O'Brien Funeral Home of Easthampton was entrusted with his care and cremation.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Robin for a memorial bench to be placed here in Easthampton in honor of Jim.

Donations can be sent to Robin Torrey 13 Hampton Terrace, Easthampton MA 01027

My deepest Sympathy to Robin and Will in the passing of Jim.He was one of the most funny, sincere generous person I have ever met. He inspired me in many ways of my life.
I would like to share some memories I have of this amazing man.
Many, many years ago my then husband and I where members of the Moose Lodge in Northampton. One night when I was pregnant with my twins we went there because my husband was on a dart league. While he was playing I was at the bar.I noticed this young man making google eyes at this young woman across the bar. I didn't know who they were at the time or how much of an impact they would have on my life until many years later.
I finally became aquanted with them after my daughter and their son(Will) became close friends. The love that Jim and Robin share is truly amazing because after 30+ years he still looked at her with those same google eyes.A love that will last thrue eternity
Now a personal note to Will. Your father is so proud of you.I remember the day you graduated high school and how emotional he was for all your accomplishments you made. Then you graduated college and got your dream job. He loves you so much and you make him so proud.
R.I.P. my dear friend until we meet again.

Robin, I remember all the pictures you showed us of what your husband took, they were great, and the cameras that were set up for all the wildlife. Those memories will be with you and your family for a life time. I am so, so sorry for your loss. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. My prayers are with you and your family.
