Joseph Bemben Obituary

HADLEY- Joseph Bemben passed away on June 20, 2012, at Hadley at Elaine Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1924 to Regina and Joseph Bemben. He was educated in Hadley schools and graduated from Hopkins Academy in 1944.

As many of his generation did in Hadley, he grew up farming onions and asparagus and continued farming until about six years ago when illness prohibited. He was one of the first in the area to raise and store butternut squash and to raise sweet corn, raising potatoes as well, but his chief crops throughout the years were butternut and sweet corn. He was also a long-time millwright at Moore Drop Forge in Springfield, retiring in 1986.

Joe was predeceased in 1978 by his first wife, Dolores (Kiczek), as well as all of his siblings, Louis Bemben, Helen Szymanowicz, Michael Bemben, John Bemben and Elizabeth Matusiewicz.

He leaves his wife, Anna and her son, Christopher as well as his former wife, Maria and her son, Ronaldo. He also leaves his sons, Joseph Bemben, Jr. of Hadley, John Bemben and his wife Ilona Trusdale of Hadley, James Bemben and his partner Tanya Bart of Northampton and Hadley; his grandchildren, Jonathan Bemben of South Hadley, Jennifer Bemben and her partner Jonn Seay of Easthampton and Jesse Bemben of Hadley; as well as great-grandchildren, Tristan and Brendan; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe traveled Europe extensively and had a strong interest in cultures and languages. An intensive mechanic and metal worker, he appreciated animals and always had a witticism or a story to share.

Joe's funeral will be Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. from the Ahearn Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations in Joe's memory may be made to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, PO Box 6307, Springfield, MA 01101-6307.

My fondest memories go back to Joe and Dolores delivering corn, quick with a joke, and the boys on the back of the truck. Thinking of you all.
