Kate,
Fellow horse lover,
I did not know you the right way.
Viewing you riding from behind in the morning, admiring your riding style and understated but classy riding clothes.
A couple of gentle conversations as I sidled up beside you when the path was wide enough, mostly about your horse, Maddie.
A flash of a smile from the other end of the lunch table.
Later, after the accident, you had the grace to say thank you to a fellow rider when she wiped your face.
And you said that you were not hurting. For that, I am grateful.
Later,
Your thumb caressing my hand as you slipped away, your only remaining way of communicating.
Later,
Holding your hand
Touching your delicate shoulder and your cheek
Watching your chest rise and fall, rise and fall
Hearing stories of your meticulous care for Maddie, your passion for cooking and gardening, your close and loving involvement with your children and husband.
Eventually feeling like I did, somehow, know you.

There are no words that suffice to express the grief and sorrow we feel. The loss of such a remarkable woman leaves the world a poorer place.
