A year after his passing, I chanced to google Lew Spratlan, because a fellow Yale songster of mine had passed away 4 days after Lew.
As a Yale College senior, Lew conducted the Yale Freshman Chorus of 1961-62 (sometimes called "reject" glee club - those who were not selected for first-string freshman club. Marvelous job by Lew, molding us "vocal "scrubs" into a swell-sounding ensemble. Had no idea about his marvelous later career!

During the semester I taught at Amherst in 1992, Lew was a generous and supportive colleague. It was clear how deeply he and Melinda were embedded in the musical community there and how great their contributions to it were. His death is a loss for music. I send deepest condolences to Melinda and his family.

I cannot say enough about Lew's enormous support of me at Amherst - my career as a film composer is largely due to his belief in my abilities - he was brilliant, supportive, funny and wise - I am so very sad to hear of his passing.
