Maria Brazill Obituary

NORTHAMPTON – Maria Brazil (Mia) E. – 66 years young – died suddenly in her sleep on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018.

She is survived by her husband Mark Eckstein, daughters Devin Brazill Eckstein (and husband Leonardo Saraceno), Jordan Brazill Eckstein (and partner Miles Harlow), granddaughter Thea Bari Saraceno, mother Regina Brazill (and husband Les Yoos), brothers William Brazill (and wife Teri) and Mark Brazill (and wife Shelley), and sister-in-law Susan Hirschfeld Eckstein, by Paul Winslow and Roseanne Winslow Murphy who were like a brother and sister to her, by Brazill and Barry, cousins too numerous to mention but whom she loved dearly, and by nieces and nephews and grandniece and grandnephews galore for whom she relished the role of "Aunt Mia" and whom she also loved with all of her heart. Her heart was huge, her love was given freely and in enormous doses.

She joins her father William J. Brazill, her brother Barry Brazill, and her brother-in-law Barry Eckstein in whatever world or dimension exists after we pass on. She was born in New York State, and experienced much, growing up in New York, Georgia, Florida and Ohio. Her constant thirst for knowledge and love of literature led her to a BA in English, an MA in English, and an MS in Library Science. Her career as a Librarian at UMass, Amherst, the South Kingstown (Rhode Island) Public Library, and Smith College (Northampton) created numerous friendships, all of whom she held dear. In life she strove to fill the lives of others with joy, adventure and hope, and her death leaves a gaping hole in the world.

A gathering to celebrate her life will be held in Sylvan Beach, New York, where she spent her summers growing up and which held a special place in her heart. Join us on Sept.r 22, 2018 at the Sylvan Beach Union Chapel, between 1 and 3 p.m. to cry, to laugh, to remember and to say goodbye.

Always missed

My Husband and I were invited to Mark and Mia’s home (way before children, 1970’s) for a 4th of July Party. It happened to be the best of all 4th of July parties ever! They lived is a lovely country area and had a comfy sweet home. It was a very hot day but being with all of our best friends was just wonderful that nothing else mattered. I have a photo that my husband Bob DeVita took of Mia sitting in her folding chair just smiling and looking so young and beautiful with a front and back drop of daisies surrounding her. She was a wonderful lady with a good heart. I miss those days of our foot loose and fancy free times. I think of you and Mark often with Love and Joy

Mia was a wonderful cousin. I wish there were words to help ease the grief that comes with such a loss. Sending hugs and thoughts of love to everyone in Mia's family. I haven't seen Mia in a long time, but I will always remember her smile and warmth.

I cannot believe she has left us. I will share a few memories. I had a few photos but this website wouldn't support them. I'll send them to Mark and perhaps he will share them. We worked together at UMass for many years. Mia and I were pregnant at the same time. I was due in November and she in January. Two weeks overdue and I come to work the Friday after Thanksgiving and Mia calls me to tell me she had her baby! I felt like an elephant. I visited her and Devin after I had my daughter, Shauna.

A few other memories - if you knew Mia well - she did everything at record speed. We replaced her telephone receiver at work with a banana and called her. She fell for it and we had a great laugh. She got back at me by putting toothpaste on my center desk drawer.

I will never forget her stuck in a meeting with a very serious boss. She was facing our department (there was a glass window) and he had his back to the window. We tied string on a doughnut and lowered it down the window and she had to try and keep a straight face.

Rest in peace my friend. Such a wonderful woman. My thoughts are with her family. Love and hugs to all.

It is hard to believe she has passed on. She was such an
empathetic, supportive boss to me at UMASS and a friend at
Smith. The world has lost a shining star, a lover of literature and truth.
I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your monumental loss. It's just not right that her bright light has been darkened so young. We were friends during our formative years and my memories of that time are vivid. Sending you my heartfelt love and prayers.
