Patricia Smith Obituary
Patricia Ann Smith
South Hadley, MA - Patricia Ann Smith, age 90, of South Hadley, passed away peacefully at the Hospice at the Fisher Home in Amherst, Massachusetts, on September 5, 2025. She will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and unwavering care for others. A long-time resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Patricia lived a life rich with family, service, and curiosity. Born in Mt. Vernon, New York, to Robert and Ann (Rooney) Manes, Patricia spent her early years in Connecticut. She graduated from Stamford High School, where she excelled academically and athletically. An avid reader and a gifted marksman, she earned the second- highest national award in junior shooting from the National Rifle Association during her senior year. She later attended Smith College and went on to graduate from Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing in New York City in 1958. Patricia began her career in pediatric nursing in New York City, rising to the position of head nurse at the Infant's Hospital of Columbia Presbyterian. She married Dr. Lorne Campbell Smith in 1961, and together they built a life devoted to family and community. In 1967, they settled in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where Patricia raised their four children while also serving as office manager for Valley Surgeons, her husband's medical practice. She volunteered at Holyoke Hospital and was an advocate for women's equality, founding Holyoke's first girls' hockey team in the 1970s. She organized sponsorships, secured coaches, managed uniforms and ice time, and even coordinated trips to Canada, leaving a lasting legacy for young women in sports. Patricia's passions were many. She loved knitting, photography, and exploring the night sky through her fascination with astronomy. Alongside her husband, she traveled the world and pursued family genealogy long before digital tools made the work easier. Her curiosity and adaptability extended to technology-she was always eager to embrace new tools and innovations. In retirement, Patricia and Lorne lived in West Palm Beach, Florida, spending summers in Rockwood, Maine, before moving permanently to Maine in 2014. She enjoyed bridge, lectures on international affairs, and her Wise Women Investment Club. She found joy and companionship in the community activities at Loomis Village in South Hadley where she moved after her husband's passing. Patricia is survived by her sister, Ann Elizabeth Arend of Denver, CO; her children, Lorne Jr., Robert, Katherine, and Andrew; her son-in-law, Mark Haradon; and her grandchildren, Amelia, Patricia, and Luna. She also leaves behind many dear friends with whom she may have lost touch in recent years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Lorne C. Smith; her brother, Robert A. Manes Jr.; her brother-in-law, Dr. William P. Arend; and her parents, Robert and Ann (Rooney) Manes.
