Thierry Grassioulet Obituary

Thierry Andre Grassioulet 1951 - 2022

Northampton, MA - Thierry Grasssioulet passed away November 3rd at Hartford Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in 1951 in Casablanca Morocco to the late Jean and Gisèle (Morel) Grassioulet. He was predeceased by his brother, Christian and leaves behind his sister, Stephane Grassioulet, a niece and nephews in France, Switzerland, USA, Turkey and Canada.

He received his Masters degree from the University of Provence, France and came to the US in 1977 where he received his Doctorate in French Renaissance Literature from the University of Michigan. He started his academic career at Smith College in 1982. Teaching was his passion and over a span of 35 years he taught at Skidmore College, Middlebury College, University of Oregon, University Rennes (France), University of California, and Cambridge College.

Thierry considered Northampton his home and retired here. He was an avid reader and an insightful observer of current events. He enjoyed stimulating conversations with his friends over a dinner table of good food and wine or a café table over an espresso.

"Le spectacle de la nature, l'observation des passions humaines et le plaisir des conversations suffiraient aux besoins naturels de l'esprit" Han Ryner

Thierry and Zac and I had many amusing conversations and dinner parties back in the 90s. Rest in peace friend.

I didn't know Thierry well, but we spent many days sitting in the same cafe. Sometimes we chatted for awhile. Sometimes we just said, hello, before returning to our own activities. Thierry was a warm and passionate conversationalist. When he talked of his life, I got the sense that he'd lived through many "interesting times." He found my own scattered and rather frenetic energy amusing. My clearest memories are of friendly laughter as I rush past, late for yet another "important mission."

It was a shock to read that Thierry died. We were friends for many years, often meeting for lunch at La Veracruzana or Osaka or Bombay Royale. I will miss him.

I'm sad to see this. I did not know Thierry, but I would see him daily on pleasant street. We always shared a hello. I will think of him drinking his coffee with a book in front of the cafe when I pass by.
Rest in Peace
