Thomas McCabe Obituary

Thomas Francis McCabe

Haydenville, MA - Thomas Francis McCabe died on May 28, 2024 at his home in Haydenville. Tom was born on August 9, 1953 in Everett, MA, the son of Marion and Francis McCabe.

Tom earned a BA in Theater Arts from U-Mass Dartmouth in 1975 and an MA in Theater from Smith College in 1977.

Settling in Western Massachusetts, he worked several years in summer theater at Mount Holyoke College. In the 1980s Tom founded and served as Artistic Director of The Children's Theatre of Massachusetts, where he twice received New England Theater Conference's Moss Hart Award for excellence in children's theater. The annual Oz Parade was a seasonal highlight.

Tom was also a passionate educator and teaching artist. At schools throughout the eastern US he employed his innovative techniques to motivate and inspire children to become creative writers. Tom always encouraged teachers, librarians, and parents to play an active part of the learning experience. He taught his original Writing Across the Curriculum at the graduate level in addition to storytelling and writing workshops at Smith, Mount Holyoke, UMass, UConn, and other colleges.

Tom was a master storyteller whose venues ranged from a one room school house on an island off the coast of Ireland to the White House. He frequently performed at the New Century Theatre and, for many years, at Boston's and Northampton's First Night festivities. In 2002, he represented the state of Massachusetts in a solo performance at the Kennedy Center. Boston's Channel 5 dubbed him "New England's Pied Piper".

Perhaps Tom's most widely-loved endeavor was the creation of PaintBox Theatre, a unique combination of improvisation and imagination for the whole family. As Artistic Director, he used humorous twists on traditional stories including Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, The Three Pigs, and The Little Mermaid, to create shows that were hugely popular with children and adults alike. Every production incorporated children's art projected onto the scenery. Raucous audience participation was encouraged, injecting energy into the performance.

Tom also fully embraced the Santa Claus persona, delighting children in productions featuring Santa's misadventures along with a zany cast of elves, reindeer, and a long-suffering Mrs. Claus.

A raconteur to his soul, Tom enjoyed nothing more than holding forth with a good story. He was also an accomplished pie maker, and his clam dip was always a huge hit at family gatherings.

He leaves his wife Anne McCabe; daughter Kristin and son-in-law Dean Powers of Florence, MA; granddaughters Nicki, Jillian and Lucy; sister Nancy McCabe and brother-in-law Richard Curzi of Watertown, MA; sister Mary Ellen McCabe and brother-in-law Richard Marcell of Fredericksburg, VA; sister Margaret and brother-in-law Steven Thomas of West Bradenton, FL; along with far-flung and beloved nieces, nephews, and their families.

There will be a celebration of his life at Tom's home (19 South Main Street in Haydenville) on Sunday, June 9th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Storytelling is welcome!

I met Tom in the Summer of 1982, when I joined that year's group of Apprentices at MHCST. Tom (and his wife at the time, Mary) were so very important to my growth as a budding theater professional, and Tom's confidence and friendship were critical to the strengthening of my then fragile teenage self-confidence. I became the sound designer of MHCST for 2 years after I completed the Apprentice-Journeyman program, and then went on to work with Tom at the Children's Theater, both as an actor and technician.
Although we have not spoken in years, Tom has always been in my heart. I shall miss him terribly.

Met "Mr. McCabe" when I was 14 years old. He thought I was shining him on with the formality. As of today : laying down while on a work call- never has happened. Being on time: check. Always doing something to provide to the process of (theatre/ entertainment/ storytelling) with efficiency and precision: check.
I lack his warmth. But hold it his my heart. Good long life!

In 1985 I played on the tennis team at MHC. I was finding it too much pressure, quit and auditioned to play an elf in a zany xmas show on campus. Didnt really know what children's theatre was like but seemed like a fun idea. ended up to be much more fun and better outlet from academic stress. Was my first meeting with Tom at the audition. He cast me as Feemer the crazy elf. From that insanely fun experience he then convinced me to audition for the MHC summer theatre-which didnt even knew existed. I had never taken an acting class, was history major and was terrified. He gave me a monologue, spoon fed me on what to do for the audition basically and then I showed up and told him I was too scared, didnt memorize anything and not auditioning.lol. He freaked and said just get up there and say /do anything. I totally panicked but then got an idea. i ran home, got my ukulele and hit the stage. Told the directors and I was just going to sing a long cowboy song my mom taught me and my sisters on long car rides. Im not a great singer or uke player and walked off the stage totally embarrassed but thinking-its ok, ill never see these people again! I done! Next day I find out I got cast in bunch of shows that summer, played the patchwork girl of oz, met wonderful Jack Neary and had a play written for me-Jerry Finnigans Sister and the rest is history! It was the highlight of my 4 years at MHC and all because of Tom McCabe believing in me when I didnt! He was my biggest fan and i'm sure he inspired zillions of other kids and adults with his big heart and presence. So lucky to have met him! I just cant believe he is gone. Huge hole. He really made the world a better place.

Tom had a special place in our lives. He was at our wedding and during dinner Tom stood and began to tell stories about people falling in love, how people found love, and how they knew it when they did. He told our story, too. It was a deeply touching moment and allowed our guests to think about their own love stories. Tom's presence graced our wedding and made it richer for everyone. His life was like that. He added grace and love in many places.

I remember Tom as well from the summer theater days. But what comes to
mind is the story times at Arcadia nature center in the late 70's.
What a yarn he could spin!

I remember playing hearts at the dining room table with the children´s theatre gang at his home In Florence. Add card sharp to his list of achievements.

I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday: "Last week, my old friend from our grad school days at Smith College and later at the Mount Holyoke College Summer Theatre, Tom McCabe, and I met for breakfast at the Owl Diner in Lowell. Tom was his old self, telling stories and laughing at all my lame wisecracks. We left the Owl promising to send each other our latest writing efforts, and pledging to get together again soon. I hadn't seen Tom for over ten years and it was wonderful to relive some pleasant memories and talk about the future. You just never, ever know. RIP, Tom... you made a difference."

To the McCabe family, I enjoyed working with and watching Tom´s many performances at Mt Holyoke Summer Theatre and at New Century Theater. He was a master story teller, creative writer and educator. I picture him surrounded by children and loved ones now, enraptured by his storytelling talents. May he rest peacefully with the angels.

Dear Anne,
I´m so sorry to hear about Tom´s passing. I enjoyed his shows at the Children´s Theatre at Mount Holyoke College many years ago. I also miss seeing you at Kerry´s when I would get my nails done during the time I lived in Western Mass. Wishing you love and peace during this difficult time.
