Susan Harley Campbell died peacefully in her home March 25, 2026, having recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She was born and was raised in
Birmingham, Michigan and earned her Economics degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
She married Sam H. Campbell, III in 1957. Sue was a devoted wife, exceptional organizer, cheerful volunteer, superb outdoorswoman, accomplished private pilot, and wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Sam died in 2020, shortly after their 63rd anniversary.
Sue was actively involved in many roles with the Junior League of Chattanooga, including chairing the effort to develop their first cookbook Dinner on the Diner and the Bargain Mart. She was the past Chair of the Board of what became the Little Miss Mag Early Learning Center, and the Women of First Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed her involvement in the Colonial Dames and the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick M. Harley and Elizabeth B. Harley, her husband, and her grandchildren Clare Bowman Campbell and Campbell McElroy.
Sue's survivors include: her brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Susan Harley and Stewart and Deborah Harley, her sister-in-law Babbie Campbell Cameron and her husband Stuart, as well as her children and their spouses, Sam H. Campbell, IV and his wife Carol, Elizabeth C. Saunders and her husband Harris, and John C. Campbell, II and his wife Marion. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Elizabeth C. Griffin and her husband Kennedy, Caroline Campbell, and Sam H. Campbell, V and his wife Greer; Philip McElroy, Jay McElroy, and Susan M. Williams and her husband Matthew; Wells Campbell, Mallie L. Campbell, W. Lewis Campbell and his wife Gabbie, and W. Austin Campbell. And her great grandchildren, William K. Griffin, V, Caroline Clare Griffin, and Mary Stimpson Campbell also survive her.
The family especially would like to thank Sue's dedicated caregivers Robin Stone, Wendy Hill, Breana Davis and Donna Bowman for their love and care.
There will be no visitation, and burial will be private.
