July 25, 1921 - March 7, 2014
Henry (Hank) Arbuckle, 92, of Philomath died Friday, March 7, at his home.
Hank was born in Sodaville to B.H. (Harry) and Iva Arbuckle. Hank's family moved to Cushman, and in 1927 to Wren. Hank and his brother, Francis, attended school in a one-room red schoolhouse in Wren. The family then moved to Philomath in 1928, and Hank graduated from Philomath High School in 1939.
Faith in God was an integral part of Hank's life. He joined the United Brethren Church (now College United Methodist Church) in 1935.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor (World War II), Hank joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country from 1942 to 1945.
Hank purchased property near the Wren schoolhouse in 1947, and built a three-room cottage. He married Opal Moore in 1948. Hank was devoted to his wife, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage last July.
Hank worked in a variety of jobs over the years, including television and radio repair jobs, and working at a Shell service station and at North Side Lumber Company. He eventually retired from Valley Linen Laundry in Corvallis.
Hank was interested in everything. He loved music, and played guitar, violin, trumpet, piano, harmonica, flute and a dulcimer he made himself. He also loved to paint and draw. Hank's daughters believed he could do anything. In addition to his other talents, he was a mechanic, an electrician, a repairman, a carpenter and more.
He loved to spend time outdoors, and he enjoyed watching the wildlife on his property. The deer knew they were safe, and liked to show their babies to Hank and Opal. Hank and Opal loved to travel, and did as much as they could for as long as they could. Hank loved his family more than words can describe.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Francis Arbuckle; and his younger brothers, Ben Arbuckle and Alvin Arbuckle.
He is survived by his wife; his four daughters and their spouses, Susan and Arnie Powell, Debbie and Steve Delmore, Rhonda and Ken Stone, and Cindy Jenkins; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Viewing is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at McHenry Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, at College United Methodist Church in Philomath.
