July 28, 1931 - Dec. 20, 2011
Nola Loray Campbell, 80, of Corvallis died of heart failure on Tuesday in Corvallis.
She was a native Oregonian, born in Milton (now Milton-Freewater) to Earl and Alda Caverhill. She began school in Long Creek, taught by the local schoolteacher, her aunt Edna. She then moved to Vale, living on a farm, being active in 4-H, and graduating in 1948. She graduated from Oregon State University in 1952 with a degree in home economics education. While in college, she was active in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
She began teaching in Cottage Grove, where she met Donald Eugene Campbell, a fellow teacher at Cottage Grove High School. They were married June 12, 1954, in Ontario. They lived in Redmond, La Grande and Austin, Texas, and returned to Corvallis in 1969. Nola had resided in Corvallis since that time.
She was very active in a number of local organizations over the years: the OSU Folk Club, the Folk Club Thrift Shop, PEO and Alpha Delta Pi. She was an active member of Corvallis Evangelical Church, serving in many capacities. She and her husband served with Youth with a Mission, Campus Crusade for Christ and Wycliffe Translators in a variety of countries and locations. She led 4-H clubs and Cub Scouts, in which her children were active.
Nola was an avid fisherman who frequently caught her limit and enjoyed the challenge of "reading" the water when river fishing. She enjoyed the thrill of salmon fishing. She seldom missed watching an OSU game or professional bull-riding events. She traveled the world.
Survivors include her sons, Daniel Campbell, former Corvallis fire chief, currently residing in Arizona, and Timothy Campbell, a pastor in Valley, Ala.; daughter Karen Campbell Morrison, a retired teacher and real estate agent in Salem; a brother, Orval Caverhill of Adrian; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Campbell; and a brother, Berthal Caverhill of Bend.
Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Dec. 31 at Corvallis Evangelical Church, 1525 N.W. Kings Blvd. The Rev. Ron Johnson will officiate.
Memorial contributions can be made to Corvallis Evangelical Church youth ministry and missions programs, Wycliffe Translators, or Benton County Dial-A-Bus.
