Carol J. Schmeling

1948 - 2026

Janesville, WI - Carol J. Schmeling, age 77, of Janesville, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Mercy Hospital, Janesville. She was born in Milwaukee on February 2, 1948, the daughter of Glenn and Dorothy (Kaun) Deringer. Carol was a 1966 graduate of Craig High School and went on to further her studies at University of Rock County and received her Registered Nursing Degree from Mercy School of Nursing. She worked for many health care systems and facilities over the course of her 40-year career as a nurse. She married James R. Schmeling on June 13, 1970, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Janesville. Carol was a member of Friends of Riverside Park and Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer at Rotary Botanical Gardens and enjoyed watercolor, acrylic painting and interior decorating.

Carol is survived by her husband, James; daughter, Dr. Tamara (Dr. Russel) Grant of York, England; brother, William (Darla) Deringer; sister-in-law, Kathy Reesman; and other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 children in infancy; and her brother-in-law, Rick Reesman.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at APFEL WOLFE FUNERAL HOME, Janesville with Rev. David Bergelin officiating. Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the APFEL WOLFE FUNERAL HOME. Interment will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park.
