Daniel Atwood Obituary

Janesville, WI - Daniel Millen Atwood, age 87, passed away at SSM-St. Mary's Hospital in Madison on Saturday, October 4, 2025. He was born on January 2, 1938, in Pocotella, ID, the son of Vern Martin and Evelyn May (Olson) Atwood. Daniel is survived by his wife, Karen; brother, Richard (Donna) Atwood; four nieces and nephews among other extended relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Barbara Ferguson.

He served his country in the United States Army. Daniel earned a BA from UW Madison (1961), an MA from George Washington University (1967), and a PhD in English Literature from Ohio State University (1975). He was a professor for many years, teaching English and Literature at Ohio State University, UW-Marinette from 1977-1988 and UW-Rock County from 1988 to 2003 when he retired.

On September 6, 1974, he married Karen E. Neslund in Franklin, Ohio. Dan and Karen moved to Janesville in 1988 and together they enjoyed playing the piano, especially classical music, theater, travel, and reading.

Dan had a long-time interest in historic preservation and served on the Janesville Historic Commission from 2004-2011. He also served the Janesville community as a poll worker for several years.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials to UWW Foundation - Atwood Scholarship would be greatly appreciated by the family. SCHNEIDER FUNERAL DIRECTORS is assisting the family.
