On September 27, 1980, he married the love of his life, Cynthia Lee (Glass) Schwartz.
John completed an apprenticeship and worked as a pressman for the Janesville Gazette from 1968 to 1988. After leaving the newspaper business, he became co-owner of Rock County Lawn and Power from 1988 to 1991. From 1991 until 2005, he proudly took on the role of a full-time father, a job he considered the most important of his life.
John was a lifelong supporter of youth sports. He spent many years coaching Little League before going on to help found Janesville Youth Football (JYF), believing deeply in the power of sports to shape young lives. He was very committed to his role, and took great pride in the work he did with JYF.
In his younger days, he enjoyed playing softball for Leo's. He loved bowling, golfing, music, taking yearly fishing trips, and cheering on his favorite baseball team; Go Cubs! He cherished the time spent sitting on his boat with a fishing pole in the water and a Diet Sundrop in hand at his favorite lake, Tenderfoot. Woodworking & carpentry were his lifelong passions, and one of his proudest accomplishments was building a bar named Spirits with his friend Jeff Hassinger, based on plans they sketched out on a bar napkin. He was always there for his friends to lend a helping hand in anything they were currently working on. John will be especially remembered for his humor, his unmatched ability to give everyone he knew a nickname, and his unwavering love for his family and community.
