Janesville, WI - Richard Alfred 'Dick' Kubly, age 93, a longtime resident of Janesville, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital, December 25, 2024. He arrived in this world on November 21, 1931, the son of the late A. Henry and Caroline (Baehler) Kubly. He grew up on the family farm in Monticello, WI. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1949. He spent a summer helping his grandfather as a mason. He met Mary Jane Farmer at Turner Hall in Monroe, WI and they were married on September 6, 1951, at St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe. They shared 67 years of marriage before her passing on September 25, 2018. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1951 to June 1955. He immediately started in June 1955 at Fisher Body (GM) and retired in 1994 after 39 years as skilled trades. They raised their 3 children in Monroe, until moving to Janesville in 1966.
He loved doing anything if it involved being outdoors. He hunted all his life across many states, including black powder and bow hunting. A variety of game was served at many meals. He was still turkey hunting until age 84. He was passionate about his yard and his gardens. Many people commented about his beautiful flowers and called it 'the mini-Rotary Gardens". Many grandchildren took prom and wedding photos in his flower gardens. He was an avid bird lover, especially Purple Martins, which came back to his yard over 50 years. It was a family joke that from April 1 to August 1 due to the Purple Martins, certain parts of the yard were off limits to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dick and Mary spent countless hours sitting on the deck enjoying their yard and listening to the birds. This love of the outdoors has been instilled in his children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren.
They took many fishing trips up north with children, grandchildren, and friends. For over 30 years, they spent some time each winter in Florida. During their travels they made many lifelong friendships.
For many years he met with a group of friends for coffee every week and occasionally they brought the group to Cedar Crest. He especially enjoyed visits from his longtime friend Curt Geller.
He is survived by his 3 children, Deborah (Jack) Larsen, Richard Kubly, Jr., and Doreen (Steve) O'Leary; his 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Steven) Jaeger, Amy (Jason) Mueller, David (Melissa) Larsen, Katie (Paul) McQuillen, Matt (Cindy) O'Leary, Nick (Audrey) O'Leary, and Christopher Kubly; his 12 great-grandchildren, Rayna and Charlotte Jaeger, Cole McQuillen, Anika Mueller, Connor, Caiden, Sawyer, and Molly McQuillen, Miles, Mason, Maya, and Avery O'Leary; sister Jean (Lee) Patterson; and by many other family members and friends. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane; son-in-law Jack Larsen, and brother-in-law Lee Patterson.
