David Barton Obituary

Dr. David Barton, a long time Gilroy resident, passed away from natural causes during his 100th year. He joined his loving wife Lilias who preceded him in death, also from natural causes, by twenty-three days. This devoted couple, married seventy-five years, moved to Gilroy in 1959, leaving in 2017 to be closer to their children in Santa Rosa, CA.
Dr. Barton was a Gilroy fixture, delivering babies, doing rounds at nursing homes and hospitals, making numerous house-calls in the early days and even a turn as on-call doctor for Gilroy High football games. Devoted to his profession he continued to practice medicine well into his late 80's.
An avid bike rider, snow skier and tennis player, wonderful husband, and father, he is survived by four children, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. His wit, charm and caring nature will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was my childhood doctor and I was so lucky to have run into him again at the little emergency clinic in GILROY when my now 18 year old daughter was a baby. I will always remember him fondly.

We are so sorry to hear about your father loss. He was awesome doctor that my daughter Jacqueline has followed his footsteps. She has graduated from her residency in Santa Rosa and will starting her journey in July up north. Our family were blessed to have him as our physician. Deepest sympathy to your and your family,

Such a loss I think of him every time i get sick and wander what he would think about this pandemic and because I know if it was possible he would give me the correct answers, DR. Barton always made time for us even when his waiting room was full, where we would sit and look at those highlite magazines he had in the waiting room, but the most wise and patient doctor Ive had in my life time and Im 58 now, on this anniversary of your passing I thank you Dr. . and may the loving arms of Jesus wrap you in his perfect love for eternity and thanks for bringing me into this world and my sister Lorraine as well, you will always be in my thoughts and we'll meet again someday without a doubt.

Dr Barton took me with my friend Ann in grammar school on trips and camping with Sally and his son. He even taught me how to catch a fish with my hands in a stream. I really missed the whole family when they moved to Gilroy. I think it was a move when Ann and I were ending the fifth grade. He and his wife were wonderful people. I have never forgotten the wonderful times we had.

Dr Barton was our physician since before my marriage. He delivered all five of my children & was involved with their care for most of their young lives. He was a caring doctor and will be sorely missed.
I have often wondered about him & his family as I used to see him out bike riding or hiking around Gavilan College. He was great to talk with and very witty.

Dr. Barton was more than our family physician. He was a good friend and one of the most genuine, kind, and caring people I have ever known. He was my personal inspiration when I decided to pursue medicine as a career, and I modeled my own style of practice on the example he set. Thank you, Dr. Barton.

Our family Doctor since 1962. I remember him as very personal yet very professional. We called on him for house calls and HE CAME! I talk of him often as a model for what a family doctor should be. He always looked for what was best for the patient and the family.

My childhood doctor, the best doctor in the world! He will always be loved and never forgotten. He made visits to our home and treated our whole family. Dr. Barton loved my father’s persimmons. In fact, my brother continued to drop off a bag to him every year after my father’s passing. We send love and prayers to your family and condolences to the loss of your mother as well.

On behalf of the Gilroy Historical Society I was saddened to hear of the deaths of David and Lil. They were delightful people, selfless community members, great neighbors, and they exemplified America's Greatest Generation. They were wonderful people. I was very lucky and blessed to have known them. They were personal friends of my parents and in-laws.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hunter, Secretary, Gilroy Historical Society

What a wonderful doctor and person! I was blessed to work with Dr. Barton. As a young RN I moved to Gilroy area in 1967 to work at Wheeler Hospital. There I met Dr. Barton and was in awe regarding how he practiced his art of healing. Always caring, gentle, patient, and funny! Of course he became my doctor and took great care of my family for years. Oh that every doctor could practice medicine like he did. What a wonderful medical world it would be!
Have a perfect forever Heavenly life dear Dr. Barton. God bless your family.

While walking on the levee one day, I seen Dr. Barton walking towards us. He said you should’ve covered your head it’s cold out here this morning. I was like wow he didn’t want me to get sick. My mom was pregnant and he delivered me and my sister. Even if he was booked with lots of appointments he always seem to fit you in. To me he was an awesome person.

What a model physician. My father always said he was the best diagnostician ever. When I was in college one night I had severe stomach pain. I went to the hospital near the college. I had 8 interns and 2 doctors trying to figure out what was wrong to no avail. They gave me pain killers and sent me home. I drove back to Gilroy the next day and my parents immediately took me to see Dr. Barton. As I laid on the table, he asked me several questions, poked my stomach, asked me if that hurt, I said yes. He said “you have an ulcer.” He was right. Very smart man and a great physician.

Dr Barton was our family doctor for years. My Mom would take me to his home on 4th street to get a shot or a quick exam. He was always kind and caring. My uncle and I were also his gardeners and cared for his yard for years. Many good memories. He will be missed.
