Atha M. Kendrick
June 2, 1918 - March 3, 2009
Longtime Surface Creek area resident, Atha M. Kendrick, passed away at Horizon's Care Center in Eckert, Colorado on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. She was 90 years of age.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, March 9, 2009, at the Eckert Presbyterian Church with Reverend Jo DeVinney officiating. Burial will follow at the Eckert Cemetery.
On June 2, 1918, Atha Mae Basey was born in Yukon, Oklahoma to Gilbert and Ida Frances (Dyer) Basey. She spent her childhood in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and graduated from high school there in 1936.
Atha married Donald Clyde Kendrick on September 16, 1939, in Clinton, Custer County, Oklahoma. After living in Oklahoma City for several years they moved to Eckert, Colorado, in 1946 where they have resided since. Mr. Kendrick preceded his wife in death on January 13, 1996, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Atha and her husband co-owned Delta Hardware and she enjoyed visiting and having coffee with the people that came into their store. She was a big fan of the Colorado Rockies and always watched and followed their games. As a homemaker she enjoyed working beside her husband doing yard work and going to all of the school activities and sports games their boys were involved with. Playing pinochle was something she loved to do and she had fun teaching the grandchildren to play Skip-BO with her.
Always first and foremost her greatest love was being a wife, mother and grandmother.
Those grateful to have shared in Atha's life include three sons, Max L. Kendrick and his wife, Betty of Eckert, CO; Charles R. "Dick" Kendrick and his wife, Kathy of Waynesville, NC, and James "Jim" Kendrick and his wife, Jonni of Delta, CO. She is further survived by eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Atha was preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents, Gilbert and Frances "Fannie" Basey; a sister, Ella Boyd; and an infant grandchild.
