Eugene Potratz Obituary

Eugene Potratz August 22, 1923 – September 18, 2010 A person's life is often lived in stages; as is the case with our dear Gene. A life that started out as one of nine brothers, then an engineering student at Purdue University, a machinist for Remington Steel where he set up the production of mortar shells during the war. He later worked for DuPont and Campbell's Soup Corporation in a management capacity. But Gene would tell you that his life began when he married Ida 22 years ago. It takes a lot of courage for a bachelor of 65 to take on a wife and mother of eight children. Gene did that with love and grace because he "had been in love with Idee my whole life". Gene is survived by his "girlfriend" Ida; his eight children, Celeste Bradley, David Potratz, Vickie Cowan (Bruce Benge), Laura Arevian (Scott), Kathy Potratz, Michael Potratz, Joanne Pearson (Charlie), and Suzi Potratz. He also had the joy of being a grandfather and great grandfather. All of his children and grandchildren are so grateful to have had such a loving, generous, gentle spirit as part of their lives. There was nothing he wouldn't do for any of us, and we are all so very thankful. He simply spoiled his Ida and she in turn, spoiled him with a kind of care that comes only from unconditional love. Gene spent much of his life in Wisconsin, enjoying his lake front cabin where he would fish and enjoy the outdoors. As complications from strokes took more and more of his independence, he often talked of his goal to go fishing again. That was not to be on this side, but now that his suffering is over he can grab a pole. Gene died with his family while under the care of Hospice. Our hope is that all who can, give generously to Hospice in his honor. You can never know what a gift it is to have a beautiful, compassionate team walking with you until you need it. Our special thanks to our home team that helped guide us so we were able to keep him home with us for so long. He lived the end of his life in such gratitude for the care and love he received and we share that gratitude with all of you. Gene was a quiet man and his wishes were that there were no services. We will have an open house at 2711 Skyline Drive from 2 - 5:00 p.m. (Honoring at 3:00 p.m.) on Sunday, September 26, 2010...or... you could just go fishin'. Please visit endofseason.org.

Dear Ida and family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. I know you all loved Gene SO much. I still think your wedding to Gene was the sweetest wedding I've ever been to. He truly loved you all. I know you'll miss him dearly and he was so lucky to have had all of you to love him. May he rest in peace and that you can take comfort in that. Love Don and Deb Ghiloni
