John Geissert Obituary

John Geissert

July 21, 1934 - May 27, 2020

John Richard Geissert of Clifton, Colorado, passed away on May 27, 2020, at the age of 85.

John was born to William and Blanche (Morris) Geissert on July 21, 1934, at Minneapolis, Kansas. After graduating from Minneapolis High School in 1952, John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was discharged as a sergeant in 1957. He completed two years of study at El Dorado Junior College in El Dorado, Kansas, and graduated in 1962 from the College of Emporia, Emporia, Kansas, with a B.A. in education. He later earned his M.A. from Western State College of Colorado, Gunnison, Colorado, in 1967.

John loved the outdoors and, upon graduating from college, applied only at schools in the mountains. In the fall of 1962, he accepted a position at Palisade High School, just west of the Rocky Mountains. John taught and coached for 21 years, leading the Palisade Bulldogs baseball team to the 2A State Championship title in 1969. He worked another 11 years as a mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service in Grand Junction before retiring permanently in 1994.

John's passion was cross-country skiing on the Grand Mesa, with a goal of logging 100 days every season; his personal best was 121 days. Ironically, he skied 85 days this season at age 85. John was a dedicated sportsman, experienced bicyclist, and skilled gardener. He enjoyed hunting, crappie fishing, hiking, camping . . . any activity where he could enjoy the beauty of nature. He was also an accomplished dancer who regularly attended Friday night dances at the Moose Lodge, where he insisted that every lady deserved a dance. At home, John was a voracious reader and a passionate fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and Colorado Rockies.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Lester, Robert, and Glenn; and sisters, Dorothy May Dabbs, Eunice Rhodenbaugh, and Doris Thornton. He is survived by sister, Bernice (Clarence) Nunemaker of Minneapolis, along with numerous nieces and nephews. John's obituary would be incomplete without mentioning his good friend, Kenny Marcella, who joined him on countless adventures over many years. John was a friend, mentor, and father figure to Kenny and was like a grandfather to his sons. John also had an "extended family" of treasured friends and former classmates in Colorado and Kansas.

John's philosophy, "Leave no trace behind," applied equally to the time he spent in the mountains and to the way he lived his life. He was a simple man who inspired those who knew him to follow in his footsteps, leaving the world a better place than they found it. Although John made it clear he did not want a funeral service, the family invites contributions in his memory to the Grand Mesa Nordic Council, PO Box 4034, Grand Junction, CO 81502 (or donate online at gmnc.org and enter John's name in the comments section). Condolences may be sent to Bernice Nunemaker at 523 E. 4th Street, Minneapolis, KS 67467.

I was so glad to see the council formed a challenge in your name. You so much inspired so many young and old in your adventures. My family, and myself got the pleasure of making many trips with you. Last New Years was not the same with out you and I going on our annual ski trip into either the Battlements or into the Middle Griffith to bring in the new year. This year Crappie fishing was good, and you would have loved the fish we were catching. The boys and I did several trips to where you and I used to fish and we did well, I know you were looking down on us with a smile. Hardly any snow yet on top, and it is December already, but I would bet you would already be at 20 trips or so. I plan on taking a trip where you requested your ashes be, and skiing in will bring back some good memories of you and I, and you of course waiting for me... or telling me, "time for you to break trail Kenny", I will go in and take my time, and reflect. God bless you John, and I hope the Geissert Challenge goes well for the skiers that choose to participate. Miss you every time I load up a bike, or skis, fishing pole, or go hunting, or backpack. Thank you for taking the time with me and the boys always. My outdoor buddy for sure. God Bless

John, not a single day goes by that I don't think of a memory of an adventure you and I participated on. The Grand Mesa brings many fond memories or our trips up and around the Grand Mesa. I know you are in a better place, and you no longer have to face what is going on in the USA and the Covid 19 stuff you so much hated to be around. Life was good, as you mentioned in you letter, and not being sad, has been done. Some day we will meet again in the heavens above and head to some of the High lakes in Heaven. God Bless. Your mountain adventure buddy, Kenny, Keevan and Corey Marcella

John was one of the most genuine people you could ever have known. He was passionate in what ever he tried in life. Many a trip into the hills, and wilderness areas were enjoyed by what John thought was just another walk in the woods, even though it might be a 7-30 mile walk. Many hours and days spent on the Grand Mesa, the Colorado Flat tops wilderness area, and many of the hundreds of lakes we both fished and hiked to. John and I rode trail bikes to lakes and hunting, we then graduated to ATV's, because we could pack more supplies in and stay longer, then regressed back to mountain bikes, they were much quieter to get around on. Hiking and skiing were still the best way, very little disruption from noise. The whirling of a fishing line being cast, or the splashing of a Crappie or bass being reeled into shore was noise enough on so many of our fishing trips. Back packing animals we had harvested on a hunt was just another work out for John, we packed out a good number of animals for each other, and had some very good meals from all we hunted. John, I will miss you and the adventures, I know the world is going in a direction you would not have liked for sure, but the time my family and myself had spent with you, in the hills, and in the garden, will never be forgotten. God received and angel of the sorts. God Bless you. RIP.
