Marian Tomm Obituary
October 31, 1921 - November 3, 2021
Marian Lucille Akrigg Tomm passed away November 3, 2021, at the age of 100.
She was born in Fort Fairfield, ME, October 31, 1921, to Evelyn Banks and John Allen Akrigg. When Marian was three, the family moved to Manchester, CT. She was active in sports, drama and music in high school. After graduating, Marian worked for Travelers Insurance Co. for three years. During WWII, she worked in the Experimental Department of Hamilton Standard Propeller.
On June 21, 1943, Marian married Army Ordnance Lt. Victor Tomm. After the war, they moved to Miami, FL, where she pursued a career as a Mortgage Loan Officer, then ultimately a legal secretary. Marian also volunteered as a Red Cross Nurse's Aid.
Their only child, Gretchen, was born in 1953.
The family was very active in the Lutheran Church, making many close friends. In 1973, the family moved to Bennington, VT. After working for many years as a legal secretary, Marian took a job as an aid to Special Education. Due to her husband's illness, they moved to Bowling Green, KY in July 1993. Vic died three months later.
In April 1997, Marian and Gretchen moved to Clifton, CO. She joined the Shepard of The Valley Lutheran Church and the Grand Junction Senior Theater. Marian volunteered at the VA, St. Mary's Hospital and HopeWest Hospice for many years. She enjoyed swimming, reading, music, arts and traveling. Marian actively cared for her home, yard and most of all, her cats.
Marian is survived by her daughter, Gretchen (Michael Bush), CA; brother, Allen Akrigg (Helen), NJ, and nieces and nephews. Her sister, Marjorie Boland, preceded her in death.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at Shepard of the Valley Lutheran Church, 3133 F Road, Grand Junction, CO, Thursday November 11, 2021, at 11:00 a.m.
Donations may be made in Marian's memory to HopeWest Center or Shepard of the Valley Lutheran Church, both of Grand Junction, CO.
