Alfred Chatelain Obituary
Born in 1935, at the American Hospital in Paris, Mr. Chatelain and his entire family left Paris upon the Nazi invasion in 1940. The family exited the country on "the last ship from Lisbon", The Excaliber, to New York. Mr. Chatelain served for two years in the United States Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, during the Kennedy administration.
He returned to Paris in 1952, opening his first antique shop on the Left Bank. He was soon well-established as an expert of fine French paintings, period clocks and furniture.
After returning to the United States in 1994, Mr. Chatelain established a successful French antique business. Having retired several years ago, Mr. Chatelain continued to be a knowledgeable source for many local antique dealers and collectors and in France as well.
Mr. Chatelain is survived by his daughter, Vanina Chatelain, and her partner, Remi Vignolo, and two grandchildren, Sandro and Mila, of Le Perreux, and his dear friends, Nancy, Gay and Gardner.
Alfred will be remembered by many for his love of animals and nature, as well as his passionate interest in art and architecture, languages, fashion, photography, manual skills and the Civil War.
Burial will be at the Saratoga National Cemetery, Saratoga Springs, NY. Arrangements are under the care of the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury and those who wish may make online condolences by visiting our website at sbfuneralhome.com
