Peter Trumbull Obituary

Peter Trumbull of Queensbury, NY, passed away on March 2, 2025. He was born on April 29, 1938, in Burlington, VT, to Barbara Cole and Donald Trumbull as their youngest son, following his brothers, John and David.

First and foremost, Peter was a writer and a lover of the written word. Whether through poetry, books, limericks or letters, his mind was always writing. A proud native of Glens Falls, he graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1956, where he formed warm friendships that remained the rest of his life. After graduating from Syracuse University, he started his professional life as a high school English teacher in Syracuse, NY, before becoming the head bibliographer at Michigan State University. Along the way, he spent several years in New York City, working as an editor for various publications, before returning to Glens Falls as a freelance writer.

His happiest place was on the shores of Lake Champlain at the family camp, which was christened "Benediction" and built by his grandfather. Peter spent many summers there with his family, canoeing, climbing Mount Philo, telling stories and working on projects with his children and grandkids. He rarely sat down. If he did, it was probably next to the love of his life, Fran. She would tell you that everything they did together was an adventure... even a leisurely walk would end with him dragging back the most interesting piece of driftwood he'd ever seen. His grandchildren can attest to that. They all have evidence of his creative gifts. Peter was also a gifted caner. He taught caning at Glens Falls Senior Center and created original wall hangings with his art.

Known affectionately in the family as the Garlic King (he loved planting garlic), Peter leaves behind many people who loved him dearly: his four children, Jessica (Jeff), Benjamin (Shawn), Elizabeth and Putnam; three stepchildren, Bob (Erin), Don (Kim) and Andrew (Rebecca); and nine grandkids, Rachel, Brianna, Jacob, Sarah, Hannah, Zachary, Seamus, Ty and Jason; two great-grandchildren, Neena Emi and Beau Augustine; and the person who made him happiest, Fran Cartmell.

Condolences may be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.

Peter is a great man and always a pleasure to have a great conversation with and ended up having many laughs. I've only known Fran and Peter for a few years but they are two of the most wonderful people I have the pleasure of knowing. I will miss seeing Peter out in the yard messing with his garlic and garden and what ever other project he was taking on and our many great conversations. Rest in peace my friend, you made the world a better place.

I feel so blessed that I was able to get to know Mr. Trumbull when we moved next door to him many years ago. Watching him in his garden or working on one of his many projects was a joy. Though we moved away over a decade ago, Mr. Trumbull and Fran will always be my most cherished neighbors.

Whether walking down the path, sitting at water's edge, swinging on the deck, or lighting a fire in the "Benediction" cabin may we all give thanks and be grateful for Peter's thoughtfulness and creativity. In the seamlessness of life Peter's affinity for driftwood resonates daily in New Mexico during each walk I take within the Galisteo Creek Watershed. Thank you cousin.

Dear Fran, am devastated by the news of Peter’s demise. As you know, Peter, Bob R, Dave D, and myself were close friends from being teenagers to the present. His humor was infectious and his curiosity unending. It was always a treat to meet once a year and be together again. What a wonderful friend he was.
