Albert Polacek Obituary

MASON CITY - Albert Polacek, 87, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (March 25, 2009) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., in Mason City with Pastor Sid Bohls officiating. Committal with military honors will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
A visitation will be held at the church Fellowship Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to Hospice of North Iowa.
Albert was born on June 25, 1921, in Mason City, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Skaitka) Polacek. As a youth, he lived in Garner for a short time before moving back to Mason City. After graduating from Mason City High School in 1939, he enlisted in the Army. He served during World War II as a staff sergeant, receiving the bronze star.
On June 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Peterson in Mason City. Albert worked for the Mason City/Clear Lake Railroad as a supervisor for 27 years. He was then employed at AMPI for six years. He retired from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1987 after 13 years as a maintenance supervisor.
Albert was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, and of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He also volunteered in the surgical waiting room at Mercy Hospital.
Albert enjoyed many hobbies; he was an avid sports fan, he loved buying and selling used cars, and he collected model trains and began collecting model cars. He also loved woodworking, building many birdhouses in his spare time. Albert always looked forward to driving down to Pro's for coffee with the guys.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lorraine; children, Diane (Bob) Peterson, of Cordova, Tenn., and Bruce Polacek, of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Nicole Peterson, Amy (Jimmy) Payne and Jennifer (Wade) Waddell; great-grandchildren, Maddison and Adam Waddell, and Connor Payne; special friend and caregiver, Mary Castino; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steven, John and Sam Vician; and sisters, Betty Anderson, Julia Wasicile and Mildred Stamou.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Aunt Lorraine, Diane and Bruce. I have many wonderful memories of Uncle Al that I will cherish forever. I know he is busy visiting with Grandpa Vician & Uncle Sam (probably watching baseball!) and watching over all of us. My love to all of you always..
