Prof. Dr. Charles Walter Schilling
July 7, 1936 - July 21, 2019
Charles Walter Schilling was born in St. Paul, MN to Johanna (Muehlstedt) and Harold Schilling on July 7, 1936 and died July 21, 2019. Charles served his country from 1954-58 in the Marines in CA, and continued to be a Marine Corp League member of the North Iowa Detachment, Mason City. He also received a recognition of service during the Cold War from the Secretary of Defense, William Powell. Charles served others as a teacher, writer, and University of Wisconsin Platteville professor.
Charles married Donna Mae Ohmann on September 15, 1962, and they were blessed with 57 happily married years. The couple have two children, Karl (Jean Lawyer) of Manly, IA, and Heidi Rizzo (Joe) of Staunton, VA. His grandchildren are Zoe Rizzo, Josephine Rizzo, Lauren Schilling, Jack Rizzo, Nick Rizzo and Sydney Schilling. Two sisters survive him: Sandra Terhell (Perry) of Afton, MN and Charlene Schindeldecker (Dick) of Aitkin, MN. Many Terhell and Schindeldecker nephews and nieces survive him as well.
A Christian memorial service will be held in Grafton, Iowa on Saturday, July 27 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Pr. S. Zamzow officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the 11 AM service. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at a later date where he will join his families and receive military honors.
