Daniel Cahalan Obituary

Daniel Cahalan

July 10, 1935 - August 27, 2025

Daniel "Danny" Maurice Cahalan passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at the age of 90. Danny was born in 1935, to Francis and Geneva Cahalan in Dougherty, Iowa. He was the fifth of six children, three sisters and two brothers.

Danny lived in Rockwell his entire life except for his military service, from his days of delivering the Globe Gazette in the 1940's to his final years having coffee and playing golf with his buddies.

After graduating from Rockwell Consolidated High School in 1954, Danny served his country in the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a jet airplane mechanic from 1955-58 while stationed in Hawaii and Japan.

Danny married Helen Kuennen in 1961 and they had five children, Denise, Mary (deceased), Don, Mike and Pat. Danny and Helen have been blessed with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Danny was employed by Armour, Swift and Monfort and managed the buying station in Marble Rock for 33 years before retiring in 2000. He served his community as a volunteer firefighter in Rockwell for over 30 years and responded to hundreds of fire calls. He was also an active and proud member of American Legion Post 208 in Rockwell for 51 years.

During his younger years, he enjoyed taking his family camping, playing softball and bowling. Later in life, he was an avid golfer and played regularly until age 89. He also loved trying his luck at the casino, playing cards, catching a ball game or western on TV, tending to his garden and tinkering around the house to fix what needed fixing.

Danny was well known for taking care of his elderly relatives and friends around Rockwell, always ensuring everyone was well taken care of. He loved to visit with friends and family, had a quick joke for every occasion and a special laugh that made everyone around him smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Geneva (Reineke); daughter, Mary; sisters, Geraldine Crisman and Barbara Fitzgerald; brothers-in-law, Roy "Junior" Crisman, Jack, "Doc" Fitzgerald, Dan Peterson, Ron Kuennen; and sister-in-law, Kay Kuennen.

He is survived by Helen, his wife of 64 years; children, Denise (Bill) Martin, Don (Jodi) Cahalan, Mike (Denise) Cahalan and Pat (Julie) Cahalan; nine grandchildren, Tim (Amanda) Martin, Stacey (Fred) O'Dell, Matt (Nathan) Martin, Cara (Paul) McGarrah, Erin (Keegan) Cahalan Hayes, Hanna (Wade) Cahalan Hambright, Logan Cahalan, Jace Cahalan and Alissa Cahalan; five great-grandchildren, Bradley, Elizabeth, Gwendolyn, Connor and Nash; brothers, Kenny (Henrietta) Cahalan and David (Gloria) Cahalan; and sister, Marsha Peterson.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, August 29, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, 305 Elm Street E., Rockwell where a Scriptural Wake service will begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm Street E., Rockwell with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell with military honors provided by members of the Gallagher American Legion Post 208 and a luncheon to immediately follow.
