Danny Brunsvold
November 7, 1946 - September 9, 2025
It is with deep sadness that the family of Danny David Brunsvold announces his passing on September 9, 2025, at the age of 78, following a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer.
Danny was born on November 7, 1946, to Mayland and Marguerite Brunsvold at Park Hospital in Mason City, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm in rural Kensett and was both baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church.
According to Danny, the best years of his life were spent at the nearby country schoolhouse-just a half mile from the farm-where he attended through the sixth grade. He graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1965 and went on to study at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minnesota. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design in 1969.
After graduating, Danny began his career at Mohawk Advertising in Mason City, Iowa. He later returned to his roots, taking over the family farm following Mayland's retirement. As part of this transition, he also purchased an adjacent property, where he embraced his love of nature by planting a wide variety of trees-many of which still stand tall today as a living legacy to him.
Without question, Danny's greatest passion and talent was his art. He was a gifted and versatile artist, working in bronze and clay sculpture, painting, pencil drawing, and wood carving. His work was featured in a documentary and displayed in museums-a testament to his skill and creativity. Yet, despite these accomplishments, Danny remained deeply humble. He often referred to his art simply as "a good hobby," never one to boast.
Danny's humility was matched by his gentle spirit and subtle humor. His sisters lovingly described him as a "big teddy bear" with a wonderfully dry wit that kept everyone guessing-never quite sure if he was teasing or telling the truth. His quiet warmth and quick, understated humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Danny was deeply loved and admired by many. He is survived by his sisters, Deanna, Julie, and Joan; special sisters, Marlene Brunsvold Kruger and Lucy Norland Heiken; his nephews, Richard and William; Richard's wife, Kat; and their children, Clara, Mayland, Howard, and Eleanor-whom Danny adored and thought the world of. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins and friends.
Danny, we love you. May you rest peacefully. God bless you.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Tracy and Michelle from hospice, as well as the Northwood Fire Department, for their care, compassion, and support. They would also like to thank Matt and Steve Ellis for their edits, love and support.
All are welcome to attend a celebration of Danny's life on Monday, September 15, 2025, at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12 p.m. Burial will be in Elk Creek Cemetery.
A light reception will be held in the church basement following the service.
