DeeAnn Hassebroek Obituary

BUFFALO CENTER - DeeAnn Hassebroek, 63, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2006) at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Funeral services for DeeAnn will be 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Buffalo Center Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be at Olena Mound Cemetery, also in Buffalo Center.

Friends may greet her family at the visitation from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

DeeAnn Marie Hassebroek was born on June 17, 1943, in Algona to Albin and Helen (Christ) Nelson. She spent her early childhood on a farm west of Lakota. In 1955, she and her family moved to Buffalo Center. After graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1961, she married her classmate and high school sweetheart, Robert Hassebroek, on Aug. 12, 1962.

She and Bob lived in Mankato, Minn., and Buffalo Center before Bob became the manager of the Midland Co-Op Oil Station in Swea City. In 1964 they moved to the home farm northeast of Buffalo Center, where they lived until 1985. In 1985, she and Bob moved into a home on the east side of Buffalo Center and in November of 2005 moved into their apartment building.

While her children were young, DeeAnn worked for several years as a nurses aide at the Buffalo Center Hospital until it closed in 1976. She then was a homemaker while her children finished school. In 2002, she decided she needed a new challenge and began working as a teacher's aide for the North Iowa Community School District.

DeeAnn was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was in the first class confirmed in the new church. She taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years.

An avid reader, she was a member of the Ladies Literary Circle and was the county Literary Circle president for several years. Bowling was DeeAnn's favorite hobby for 30-plus years and she served as league secretary for many years. Her greatest joy was her family and her four grandchildren.

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at the age of 63 years, three months and nine days, DeeAnn passed away at the Albert Lea Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert, of Buffalo Center; her daughter, Darla Hassebroek, of Des Moines; her son, Steve (Sharla) Hassebroek of Buffalo Center; four grandchildren: Morgan, Sam, Rachel and Ben; her father, Albin Nelson, of Buffalo Center; three brothers: Alan (Anita) Nelson of Grain Valley, Mo.; Lowell (Kay) Nelson of Aurora, Colo.; Donovan (Phyllis) Nelson of Littleton, Colo.; her sister: Naomi (Bill) Limberg, of Blue Springs, Mo.; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, a host of relatives and many dear friends.

DeeAnn was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Nelson; two children, David and Sheila; and by two brothers, James and Eric Nelson.

DeeAnn was a very special person and a interesting person to know. She was alot of fun and she knew how to give good advice. She was a special friend that would help you out in any way that she could. A wonderful was she that her family came first. She really put up a fight with cancer, but now the Lord has came and took her home and out of all the pain that she was having.Bob you were the type of husband that was there for her and now the Lord said you did all that you could do. We have the good memories of DeeAnn your wife and mother and gramother, that would give you all that she did and now no more pain and she's in heaven looking down making plans for her family and friends. DeeAnn will be deeply missed by everyone that knew her. "Remember, death is not distinguishing of the light, it is only putting out the lamp because the Dawn has come"

I didn't know DeeAnn all that well, but I stayed with her and Robert back in 1993 when her mother-in-law (My Aunt) Margaret was sick with
cancer. I enjoyed every minute with her.
