James Berneman Obituary

James Berneman

September 15, 1941 - October 31, 2024

MASON CITY - James "Jim" William Berneman, 83, of Mason City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, MN. Arrangements are with Fullerton Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St SE, Mason City, with a one-hour prior visitation. Following the service, Jim will be laid to rest at the Rockwell Cemetery in Rockwell.

Jim was born on September 15, 1941 in Mason City to Francis and Hazel (Thurman) Berneman. He attended Mason City schools. Jim was united in marriage on September 24, 1968 in Sioux Falls, SD to Beverly (Paine) Berneman. Jim worked installing home insulation for four years then roofing in California for a year before he began working for the City of Mason City as a mechanic; he did that for 34 years until retirement in 1998.

In his younger years, he had a race car named "Black Cat 9" and he spent a lot of time working on that car. Throughout his life, Jim's hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing pool. Jim belonged to the Lunker Club, which was a group of people that went to Canada twice a year to fish. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan (even though they were his "favorite team to bet against"). Jim looked forward to "tea time," with his buddies at Ransom's. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Tim (Sue) Berneman of Mason City and Robert (Sally) Berneman of Mason City; step-son, Kenneth (Judy) Schroeder of Liberty, KS; grandchildren: Ashley (Joshua) Phipps, Adam Berneman, Robert Berneman II, Shayla (Jess) Ballhagen and Briar Berneman; great-grandchildren: Aiden Phipps, Bella Ballhagen, Liam Ballhagen and Mikih Berneman; sister-in-law, Bonnie Berneman and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Berneman; son, Jeff Berneman, step-son, Christian Schroeder; parents; siblings: Lorraine Jenison, Kay Schoephoerster, Richard "Dick" Berneman, Robert "Duke" Berneman and Bernard Berneman and beloved dog, Riley.
