James Everett 'Jim' Menken
September 19, 1937 - May 15, 2018
GREENE - Funeral services for James Menken, 80, of Greene, will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 18, 2018, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Daniel Flucke officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be Friday, May 18, 2018 from 12:30 – 2p.m. at the church.
James was born in Greene, Iowa, on September 19, 1937 the oldest son of John and Lela (Smith) Menken and died May 15, 2018, at the Valley View Care Center in Greene. He received his education in public school graduating from Greene High School in 1955.
James was baptized in 1942 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene and confirmed in 1954. Jim ushered at church for over 20 years, served on the church council and was instrumental in building the new edition. He and his wife were Luther League sponsor's for 8 years. Jim has recently been an active member of the Greene Men's Wednesday Morning Prayer Group.
James was united in marriage to his loving wife, Joan on August 18, 1957, and the couple made their home in Greene. They were blessed with one daughter Tamela Ann; and 2 sons, Troy James and Tory Jay.
James served on the Greene Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. Jim was one of the founding fathers of the Greene Jaycees and stayed active with their activities. He also served as President and for other offices with the Jaycees. James was Region 3 Chaplin for the state and was awarded the OUTSTANDING YOUNG RELIGIOUS LEADER award. He was a key individual in building the north shelter house in Perrin Park.
Jim worked as a mechanic and then custodian for the Greene Community Schools for 37 years until ill health forced him to retire.
Jim loved to fish, golf, and travel through all of the states. He especially enjoyed his Grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Jim loved to drive the motor home to Florida to spend his winters.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Josie Kay, their daughter Tami (Frank) Anamosa, Troy (Margo) of Plantation Acres, FL; Tory Jay (Kim) Charles City; grandchildren Ryan and Annie Peyton, Chelsea (Joe) Walsh, Sarah Schindler, Karina Menken, Neil (Clarissa) Menken, Zac Schilling, Kyle Schilling, Hunter Menken, Hannah Menken, Haven Abben, Clare McNamara, Vince (Bailey) Abben; 16 great-grandchildren Lucy, Kellen, Logan, Maxwell, Chase, Kylee, Haidyn, Davyn Aislyn, Javis, Nevah, Aiden, Asher, Blake, Kari, Eden; sisters Carolyn Martin of Greeley, CO, and Evelyn (Bob) Fink of Hampton; Brothers Don (Marie) of Indianola, Gordon (Shirley) of Jefferson City, MO., Martin (Karen) of Rockwell, Douglas (Val) of Dumont.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Francis and an infant sister.
