Thomas Leary Obituary

CHARLES CITY - Thomas P. Leary, 84, of Charles City, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for Thomas Leary will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday where a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be at 4 p.m. with the Rosary following led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue on hour prior to Mass Wednesday at the church.
Thomas Patrick Leary was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Charles City, the son of Thomas Leary, Sr. and Catherine Lindblom.
He attended school at Immaculate Conception and at Minneapolis, later receiving his GED. He then attended masonry school in Bloomington, Ill. Thomas proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.
On Nov. 11, 1954, he was united in marriage to Barbara Toepfer at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.
Thomas was employed by Triad Construction, where at one time he helped for several months in the construction of the Northwest National Life Building, now the ING Building, in Minneapolis. Later he expanded his career by owning his own masonry business.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. and was past president of Floyd County Wildlife Conservation. His interests included enjoying the great outdoors where he fished, hunted, did wood cutting and splitting, golfed, biked and gardened. Thomas also liked to watch various kinds of sports. Family was very important to Thomas and he looked forward to sharing his life with them.
Living family members include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Leary of Charles City; two daughters, Deborah Leary of Charles City and Linda (Craig) Harrington of Clarksville, Tenn.; a brother, John Leary of Waterloo; a sister, Patricia Kalmen of Bloomington, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Clancy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, James, Vincent and William Leary.
