Vera was born on September 12, 1936 in Crystal Lake, Iowa, to Floyd and Gladys (Plantz) Anderson. She was raised and attended school in Crystal Lake. On November 21, 1954, she was united in marriage to Herbert Hinz and together they had five children. Vera and Herbert started their life together in Britt where Herb was a cattle and crops farmer and Vera a homemaker and farmer's wife. Together they later farmed in Thompson, Woden, Riceville and lastly Charles City. Vera began working once their children were all in school at a nursing home in Riceville and later at Chautauqua Guest Homes-Riverside as a dietary assistant until her retirement.
Vera's most important role in life was being a mother to her children. She always put them first and made sure their education and involvement with church was prioritized. Her hobbies included reading, quilting and sewing. Vera was an excellent cook and did a lot of gardening and canning. Vera was often reserved and quiet, but had very strong opinions and faith-based values she instilled in her family.
