Viola Root Obituary

Rockwell - On Thursday, May 23, 2013, Viola Orene Root, of Rockwell, passed away at The Rockwell Community Nursing home at the age of 99.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, with a one-hour visitation prior, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell. Pastor Rhea Evanson will officiate. Graveside will be at Rockwell Cemetery, following the funeral. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Peter Lutheran Church. Viola was born on Feb. 13, 1914, in rural Latimer, the daughter of Jens and Adaline (Baker) Pederson. She graduated from Sheffield High School with the class of 1932. On March 4, 1937, Viola was united in marriage to Harold George Root at Congregational Parsonage in Mason City. From this union two children were born. She was a long time member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell, Iowa. Viola loved teaching Sunday school at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thornton which she did for 17 years. She also enjoyed being the bingo coordinator at Rockwell nursing home. In the past, she had been both vice president and president of the Martha Circle of St. Peter Church. Viola was involved in the Grandmother's Club, and The Kensington Club. She farmed with her husband, Harold, and family. Following his death she worked in the Rockwell Community school district kitchen for nine years. She enjoyed playing cards including 500, Pinochle, Uno, and Skipo with neighbors, family, and especially her twin sister. In the winter, she would also tie quilts. Viola and Harold would attend all their children's athletic events.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son Dale and his wife Mary Root of Litchfield, Minn.; daughter Barbara and her husband John Gregory of Cedar Rapids; four grandsons Gregory Root, Christopher (Bridget) Root, William Gregory, and James (Amy) Gregory. Also, five great-grandchildren Josiah, Matthias, and Lucas Gregory, Emma and Lauren Root, three sisters Vietta Bruns her twin of Rockwell, Rozella (Edwin) DeVries of Greene, and Verta Mae Jorgensen of Pine City, Minn.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Harold.
