Lori Keen Obituary

Anacortes - Lori Keen died after a brief illness at the age of 67 on August 31, 2023.

Lori served the pet owners of the greater Anacortes area for nearly 30 years; first as a Veterinary Assistant for Fidalgo Animal Medical Center and while working there, developing a private business known as Happy At Home, as a pet sitter for their clients and a growing clientele across Fidalgo Island. Lori had a natural affinity for animals and loved working with people and their pets. She shared many great critter stories and helped get many animals adopted into loving homes. She couldn't walk through Anacortes with out a dozen people saying hello.

Her earlier career was as a trained professional chef. As one of the earliest women to attend The Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie New York, Lori brought her honed culinary skills to create amazing meals professionally and for family and friends. She worked at several restaurants in the San Francisco area for over 15 years. Whether Thai, Northwest, or Greek, she explored and mastered several national cuisines.

Lori enjoyed several hobbies during her years in Anacortes including participating with the rowing club; OARSS, kayaking on the bays and lakes around Fidalgo Island, Dancing with the Zumba group, and helping with the Bark in the Park events.

She is survived by her brother Barry Schwartz of San Diego, CA and sister Anne Schwartz, (Michael Brondi) of Rockport. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and her extended family of dogs and cats and their peoples.

There will be a life celebration on Saturday, October 14th at the Anacortes Senior Center from one to three. Please bring a story to share.

Lori was such a positive & loving person. We shared many conversations about pets, politics, cooking & more. She was a true animal whisperer. I will miss my fellow Grateful Dead fan. May you be surrounded by all your past furry friends

Lori was so kind to my dogs! I sent many clients to her, and they were always pleased with how knowledgeable and caring she was. Lori, you will be missed.

I first got to know Lori when she worked at Fidalgo Animal Medical Center where I was a veterinarian. She loved working with animals and gave them her best care. She would often confide in me that she had found her love being around animals. That love included exotic animals as the photo below shows. That led to her establishing her own business "Happy at Home." This was her calling as she developed quite a clientele over the years. She could be depended on to take care of pets when needed and to give them the attention they needed. She will be missed in the community. I can still see her as she drives by and gives a big wave out the window as she passes me on the street.

Lori was my next door neighbor. We rowed together with OARSS and took our kayaks out in the bay. Lori took in a great stray Maine Coon who she named Turnup (since he turned up) and gave him to me as he couldn't acclimate to indoor life. We still have him. He is much loved as was Lori.
