Bobbie Mabe Obituary

DANVILLE, Va. - Bobbie Lee Mabe, 75, of 1032 Twin Arch Road, died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 8, 1929 in Danville, he was the son of the late Robert L. Mabe and the late Ollie Darnell Mabe.

Mr. Mabe had been a patient in the hospital since falling ill on Christmas Eve.

He lived his entire life in the Danville area and in the 1950's played professional baseball. He began his baseball career as a relief pitcher for the Houston Buffs, then played in the major leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and the Baltimore Orioles. His stock in trade was a whistling fastball and an assortment of tricky breaking stuff. In 1956, after five years in the minors, he topped the Texas League with 21 wins and 195 strikeouts. He posted a fine 2.10 ERA at Omaha the next year and was called up to the Cards in late 1958. He was later with the Reds, before completing his career with Baltimore.

After baseball, he worked as a district manager in sporting goods for K-Mart and then he worked for Dan River Mills, where he retired as a supervisor. He was a member of the Glen Oak Country Club and was an avid golfer.

He married Betty Ingram Mabe on December 28, 1948. She died Nov. 25, 2003.

He is survived by a daughter, Dana M. Williams of the residence; a brother, Milton D. Mabe of Moneta, Va.; a granddaughter, Kelli Young and her husband, Jonathan Young of Mebane, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Brandyn Michael Young and Kristopher Andrew Givan Young.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 10 at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Albert Moser officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence, 1032 Twin Arch Road.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main is in charge of arrangements.

We were blessed to share school days with Bobby and to enjoy watching his fantastic pitching. He truly loved the sport and was a shining example to everyone who saw him "throw" a ball. We have enjoyed our reunions and 2nd Tuesday evening dinners with him, and to see the delight in his face as he told of his days of baseball...God bless the family, you have great memories of an outstanding athlete and all round good guy...

My sincere condolences to members of Bobbie Mabe's family.

I thank Bobbie for the many wonderful memories, for his friendship and for his example.

Bobbie was a loved friend and classmate throughout elementary and high school. His primary interest was always baseball, but in his earlier years he loved singing and playing the guitar and flirting with the girls. Bobbie was an attractive boy who was popular with everyone and the envy of many.

In elementary school Bobbie would frequently tell stories about what exciting things he and ‘Ollie’ had done over the weekends. It was months before learning that ‘Ollie’ was his mother, rather than a sister.

I moved from Schoolfield in 1948 and lost contact with Bobbie. When I started returning for SHS Reunions, Bobbie and I reconnected as old friends, just as if there had not been a separation.

I will truly miss seeing and chatting with Bobbie.
