Doris Francis Windhorn

Doris Francis (Bigger) Windhorn, 86, of Danville, Virginia, passed away on December 29, 2023. Doris was born on March 13, 1937, to James and Lottie Bigger. The youngest of the four Bigger daughters, "Little Bigger" spent her early life in Brosville and then on Westover Drive, helping out on the Bigger's tobacco farm. She graduated from Brosville High School and attended Madison College (now JMU).

In 1955, Doris was chosen as the Tobacco Festival Queen and crowned Miss Danville. It was through performing those duties that she met minor league baseball player Gordon Windhorn. They wed in 1957 and celebrated their 65th anniversary before Gordon's passing in 2022. Together, they traveled the world; Gordy playing ball and Doris setting up house, expertly arranging their lives wherever they went.

Doris was a talented pianist, seamstress, and gardener. She was dedicated to her husband, her sisters, her children, grandchildren, and her faith. She is already dearly missed.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Gordon, sister Elna, and sister Faye. She is survived by her son Steven (Jodie), daughter Sally (Jim), three grandchildren Kaitlyn, James, and Olive, two great-grandchildren, and sister Virginia (Bobby).

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Norris Funeral Home at 3995 Franklin Turnpike. There will be a viewing one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
