James Poindexter

HURT - James Poindexter, age 61 of 223 W. Spencer Rd. Hurt, VA died Saturday (8-30-08) morning at his residence. Born in Pittsylvania County on April 5, 1947 he was a son of the late Lynch Poindexter and Mrs. Leva Boyd Poindexter. He was married to Mrs. Shelia Poindexter who survives.

Mr. Poindexter was a member of the Second St. Paul Baptist Church at Lynch Station, VA where he served on the Trustee Board and was a member and president of the Sr. Choir. He was employed with A.O. Smith Company of Altavista, VA.

He was preceded in death by three brothers; Shirley, Claude and Herman Poindexter and four sisters; Ada Mae Miller, Pauline Word, Adell Slayton and Lillie Parker.

In addition to his wife of the residence he is survived by his step parents, Pride and Hilda Hunt of Nathalie, VA; a step-daughter, Rebecca Smith of Roanoke, VA, a step-granddaughter Jayedan Smith of the residence; One brother, Waverly Poindexter of Lynch Station, VA; Six sisters; Arlene Davis, Juanita Hall, Catherline Hawkins all of Hurt, VA, Louise Callands of Gretna, VA, Estelle Hall of Long Island, VA, Betty Dejarnette of Brookneal, VA and Bernice Jones of Richmond, VA; his father and mother-in-law Wiley and Commeaner Crider of Lynch Station and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Rev. Nigel Alleyne with interment in the Second St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

I worked with James back in the early 1970's. I remember him as a good hard working man, and willing to help anyone he could. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time and pray the Lord will comfort you as he only can.
