MELVIN OAKES Obituary

Melvin Richard Oakes

Melvin Richard Oakes, 64, of 136 Ripley Lane, Danville, VA departed this earth to enter the gates of heaven to be with his heavenly Father, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, June 25, 2012. He had been a patient at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC. Born June 7, 1948 in Danville, he was the son of the late James D. Oakes and the late Virginia Payne Moorefield. He was married to Doreatha G. Oakes who survives of the residence. He retired from Pet Dairy after 25 years of service and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Angel Oakes Rigney and husband, Timothy of Dry Fork; his brothers, James David Oakes, Jr. and wife, Ruth of Danville and Winford Leon Oakes and wife, Margaret of Blairs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew C. Rigney and Steven N. Rigney. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Linwood Cook officiating. American Legion Dan River Post 1097 will have military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 27, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Mt. Hermon Chapel and will be at the residence at other times. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorials be made to the Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, 4268 Franklin Tpke, Danville, VA 24540.
