Virginia Carter Satterfield

Virginia Carter Satterfield died peacefully at the age of 96, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. She was born at home in the Shady Grove Community of Providence, NC, on January 19, 1914, the daughter of the late Mamie Woods Carter and Lewis "Gib" Gibbons Carter, Sr.

She attended the University of Virginia School of Nursing and worked during WWII in the office of Dr. Hall in Danville.

Her family moved to Tenafly, New Jersey in 1946, where she lived and was a homemaker until returning to Danville in 1986. She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Selden Satterfield, Sr., in 1978. She leaves her children, Dr. Rose Satterfield, of Pelham, NC, Cynthia Carter Satterfield, of Los Angeles, CA and Louis Selden Satterfield, Jr., of Norcross, GA; and grandchildren, William A. Keller, Jr. and his wife Margret of Augsburg, Germany , and Virginia "Ginger" Keller of South Pasadena, CA, and great-grandchildren, DmitriA. Keller, Tristan M. Keller, Solveig V. Keller, and Selma L. Keller.

She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Irving Carter Gay and brothers, Frank Woods Carter and the Rev. James Edwin Carter. She is survived by her sister, Lucy Carter Elliott, her sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle Carter and Thomas T. Shadrick, and her brother-and sister-in-law, Ann and Lewis G. Carter, Jr. all of Danville, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

She will be remembered by her family and her many friends and caregivers as a gracious and loving woman who loved life and had faith in God.

A funeral service will be held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Providence, NC, at 2 PM on Saturday October 30. Her cousin, The Reverend Wilson R. Carter of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Danville, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Rose Satterfield in Pelham and will receive friends at her home following the burial.
