Lucille Hornberger Obituary

Lucille Alma Hornberger
Edwardsville - Edwardsville
Lucille Alma Hornberger came into the world on January 15, 1922, in Tamo, Arkansas. She was the second of 9 children born to Thomas Hornberger and Willie Carmen English. Thomas took his wife to Arkansas to meet his family. They stayed with his Aunt Lizzie Lambert and her family. While there, he took a job with the railroad. Lucille, their new baby girl was born during this trip. The family eventually moved to Edwardsville, Illinois in 1927. Lucille attended Lincoln School through High School graduation. For most of her life she enjoyed a career as a professional cook; a career which began at Mussos' Restaurant, Rusty's Bar and Grill, Edwardsville Country Club; as well as working at a nursing home in Granite City. The job of her lifetime was her employment at the Madison County Jail where she retired as Head Cook, well into her seventies. Her meals, pies, cakes, jams and cha cha recipes made her a novelty in her own right. Lucille worked hard and doted on her two children Carolyn Hoskins and Kenneth Connors both living in California. She was a long-time member of Mt. Joy Missionary Baptist Church under the original leadership of Reverend Gardner. Under the leadership of Pastor Steve Jackson, she was a Steward and a cook in the Kitchen Ministry. She loved God and Mt. Joy Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member for 84 years. Her family was her crown jewel, she simply adored them. She loved the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors. She enjoyed visiting California during the Illinois cold winter months. She always looked forward to celebrating her birthday with her grandson Robert and sharing the same birthday as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She made lots of special friends in California and attended Pilgrim Baptist Church. She enjoyed the special friendships of Jean Brown, Sherry Mays, Jill Hyatt Cook, Pat Bonds, Billy Madden, Jerry Rice, Debi and Sandy Carrubba and Alvita Wright. Lucille leaves to cherish her memory her two children: Carolyn Hoskins and Kenneth Connors (Regina); sister Rita Bonds; grandchildren, Jackie, Steven (Annette), Michael, Kathy, Robert (Takayah), Michelle, Diallo, Constance (Raymond); a special niece, Delores (Suky) Brown and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Thomas, Leonard, Robert and Leroy Hornberger and sisters; Virgie Hornberger, Christine White, and Marian Miller.
