Roy Dees Obituary
Roy William Dees, age 94, of Litchfield, died at 1:25 p.m., on Tues., Feb. 26, 2008, in Heritage Manor in Litchfield.
He was born on Dec. 23,1913 in Edwardsville, a son of the late Walter Grover and Anna Rose Evanik Dees.
He married Elizabeth A. "Betty" Lakatos on June 12, 1943, in Granite City. She survives.
Along with his wife, he is survived by He is survived by: five sons: Timothy, and wife Rochelle, Dees of Litchfield, Francis "Frank", and wife Maria, Dees of Altamont, N.Y., William, and wife Meg, Dees of Litchfield, Charles Dees of Springfield, and Denis (Susyn) Dees of Essex, Vt.; seven grandchildren: Jon, and wife Jennifer, Dees, Breanna Dees, Jason, and wife Tricia, Dees, Sarah, and husband Ted, Dees-Schwartz, Colin Dees, Alex Dees, and Chris, and husband Greg, Starkey; and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Rick; three brothers: Ernie, Charles and Arthur Dees; and a sister: Irene Codemo.
He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1933 and attended Illinois College in Jacksonville for one year. He was a decorated WWII U.S. Army veteran having served with the 1301 Combat Engineers of General Patton's Army from 1943 through December of 1946. He was awarded 4 bronze service stars for campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. Following the war, he returned to central Illinois where he began working in sales for Union Starch Company in St. Louis. From 1947 until 1955 he worked as a salesman for several other companies, selling merchandise to clothing & dime stores in central states area. From 1960 until 1969, he was the manager of Imperial Gas service station in Litchfield. He and his wife, Betty, owned the Dees Complex located on the corner of E. St. John and S. Jackson streets in Litchfield that housed a beauty shop, carwash, apartments, laundromat, mobile home park and the Unemployment Office for the state of Illinois until Roy's retirement in 1983.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Litchfield.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 4, at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday, Mar. 5, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Litchfield. Fr. James Neuman will preside.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Litchfield.
