Albert was born in Covington, Kentucky on August 2, 1937 to the late Albert B. and Sarah Alene McNabb Diekmann. After graduating from high school, Albert joined the United States Air Force. Upon completion of basic training, Albert married the love of his life on January 21, 1957, Shirley Ann Ptak.
