Anita Dunlap Obituary

HASKELL Anita Kaye Dunlap, 48, beloved mother, daughter and friend to a multitude of people around the world completed her worldly travels on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in Willow Cemetery under the direction of Holden McCauley Funeral Home, Haskell. A visitation will be from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the funeral home. The family will also receive friends at 1103 N. Avenue G, Haskell, Texas. Anita was born Jan. 27, 1961, to Gene and Thelma Dean Dunlap in Haskell, Texas, on a cold snowy day. Anita attended public schools in Spur and McCaulley, Texas; graduating from high school in 1979. She attended Angelo State University where she graduated in 1982 with a bachelor of arts degree in government and English. She continued her pursuit of higher education and received a masters of education in special education. Anita was one of the survivors of the 1978 McCaulley bus wreck. This experience shaped her life philosophy of living each day as if it were her last. It inspired her ambition to travel and make a difference in the lives of students around the world. A lifelong educator and sports enthusiast, Anita began her teaching and coaching career in Novice, Texas, and continued in Hamlin, McCamey, Jim Ned and Seminole before being hired by the U.S. Department of Defense Schools where she taught the children of military personnel in Iceland, Germany and Japan. Anita's career achievements were numerous, but they pale in comparison to her greatest accomplishment of all - the birth of her daughter, Shady Blue Destiny Dunlap, on June 19, 1997. "My Girl" fulfilled every wish that Anita had of being a mom! In her own words, "whoever would've thought a poor kid from a ranch in West Texas could have seen and done so much in such a short time? I have been truly blessed with family, friends, opportunities, education, and work." Anita is survived by daughter, Shady Blue; mother Thelma; sister Shirley Parker; brother James "Cookie" Dunlap and wife Judy, all of Haskell; and dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father; and two sisters, Leta Faye Dunlap and Carolyn Sue Wilborn. The family would like to thank Dr. Victor Hirsch and staff of Abilene, the staff of Haskell Home Health, and Hendrick Hospice Care. The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1922, Abilene, Texas, 79604.

I am a teacher with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools now stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. Anita and I taught together in Misawa, Japan. We also did a lot together since we both have daughters who are the same age and were in the same class. I kept in touch with her ever since she left Misawa in June, 07. I remember when she was diagnosed with inoperable spinal cance, it just broke my heart. I last spoke with my dear friend and colleague in August and she told me that the cancer was slow growing and was hoping that she would had live to see Shady off to college, but God had other plans. Anita has made a difference in the life of many and will surely be missed.

I just went to look her up to e-mail her to thank her for all she did for my life and tell her what had become of me. I am very sadden to discover this instead. She was truely an angel. My e-mail is [email protected] if anyone would like keep in touch. I am so sorry for the loss for her family and daughter.

I am formerly from McCamey. Anita was my high school coach and a dear friend. We have become close the last couple of years. She tried so hard to get me to move to Iceland to teach with her. She has helped me tremendously these past couple of years. I will miss her more than you know and i wish i would have known so that i could be at the services. Tammy Vining_P.O. I am in McCamey, Texas; my daughter had Anita in sports. my daughter treasures her relationship with Anitia. I also treasure the rememberance of how she showed respect for the school and also that she earned the respect from her sports team, they looked up to her for what she stood for and who she was. My daughter is really going to miss her. I know that it is hard when you loose a very important person in your life. take it from me; in loosing my husband the beginning of the year let the Lord hold you and carry you thru this journey. I do not know this family, but I am from Rotan and remember the bus wreck well and what a tragedy it was for the entire county.

For Anita to live and go on with her life in the way she did is such an inspiration to me.

May God wrap His arms around the entire family in this trying time.
