BILL HARGIS Obituary

VAN HORN - Bill W. Hargis rode quietly into the sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, in El Paso, Texas. Born on Feb. 2, 1935, in San Angelo, his family ranched in the Paint Rock and Eden areas for many years. In the 1940s, the family moved to the Van Horn area, where Billy graduated high school in 1953. He then served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany for three years. Upon his discharge, Billy attended college at Texas Tech University and The University of Texas at El Paso. Billy was a history teacher and coach, a juvenile detention officer, an inspector for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association for 23 years, a Special Texas Ranger and always a rancher. He was a true believer in the "neighborin'" concept - looking after others as diligently as he looked after his own. He was respected, admired and loved by many, and he never, ever met a stranger. Preceding him in death was his father, Ray Hargis; mother Willie "Bill" Benge Hargis; and brother John Calvin Hargis. Bill is survived by his wife, Sherry, of Van Horn; three sons, Wood Hargis and wife D'Ann of Pflugerville, Texas, Wayne Martin and wife Karen of The Colony, Texas, and Sam Hargis and wife Ann of Hilliard, Ohio; three daughters, Kellie Robyn James and husband Bruce of Rowlett, Texas, Toni Sudduth and husband Rabbit of Eldorado, Texas, and Bobbi Burke and husband Harry of Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; his brother, Ray Kelly Hargis and wife Martha of Little Rock, Ark.; sister-in-law Elizabeth Hargis of Conway, Ark.; and three nephews and their families. Services were at the Hwy 54 Church of Christ in Van Horn, Texas, on Friday, Sept. 16, with interment in the Van Horn Cemetery. Billy loved singing and the many children who came to church seeking Jesus' promise. In honor of this, memorials may be made to the Children's Bus Ministry, Hwy 54 Church of Christ, Box 733, Van Horn, TX 79855.
