Douglas Gartman Obituary

ROBERT LEE - Douglas Gartman, a very special husband, father, pawpaw, and great pa, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, April 4, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Robert Lee Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be grandsons Brad Gartman, Kenneth Gartman, Wes Hood, Aaron Hood, Eric Hood, Joe Blair, Grant Flowers, Justin Gartman, Brandon Gartman, and Brycen Gartman. Burial will follow in the Robert Lee Cemetery. Services are under direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. Douglas was born on Feb. 9, 1927, in Sanco, Texas. He was the second child and only son of Sallie Mae and Bryan Gartman. He graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1944, and was the first student to receive the Lone Star Farmer Award in Robert Lee F.F.A. He attended Texas Tech and then served in the United States Navy. Douglas served on the school board at Silver and Robert Lee and on the Coke County Livestock Board. Douglas married Erma Lee Wink on Sept. 29, 1946 and they celebrated 61 years together. They lived in the Sanco area for eight years before moving to the Perkins-Prothro Camp at Silver until 1964. They returned to their home at Sanco in 1964. He was a member of Robert Lee Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by His wife, Erma Lee, his parents Sallie May and Bryan Gartman, and two brother-in-laws, Teddy Pitcock and Butch Winkler. Douglas is survived by his seven children, Dennis Gartman and wife Linda of Ganado, Tex., Rhonda Hood and husband Bill of Robert Lee, Judy Blair and husband Roy of Robert Lee, Vicki Flowers and husband Walter of Mertzon, Kerry Gartman and wife Frankie of Robert Lee, Jana Scott and husband Hoza of Keller, and Randy Gartman and wife Shea of Forsan. His sisters, Winnie Pitcock, Melva Winkler Lee, and Annice Walker all of Robert Lee. Granddaughters Kimberly Tavarez, Tracie Tennison, Jordan Gartman, Janae Helaire, Gracie Gartman, and 18 great grandchildren.
