Dusty Cain Obituary

Dusty Colleen Garland Cain

San Angelo

Dusty Colleen Garland Cain of San Angelo, who earned All-State volleyball honors in 1966 for Iraan High School's Braves as well as Phi Beta Kappa honors 16 years later at the University of Texas at Austin, died Monday, July 27, 2015 following a battle with cancer. She was 67.

Born in Iraan to Carter Rex and Bobbie Rae Bentley Garland, Cain graduated from Iraan's public schools, flew briefly with Eastern Airlines, moved to San Angelo in 1972 and married the love of her life, attorney Jerry Cain, the following year. They actively participated in Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign in 1976, and attended his inauguration in Washington, DC.

When her husband's work took him to Austin with Attorney General Mark White in 1979, Cain enrolled in UT, the first member of her family to attend college. She graduated at age 32 with summa cum laude (highest) honors. Another move took the Cains to College Station for six years and then to Blacksburg, Virginia, where her husband served as general counsel at Virginia Tech from 1988 to 2009.

Retirement brought the Cains back to San Angelo, where they have taken an active interest in rescuing homeless dogs, supporting the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue and trying to rescue the Democratic Party.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry; son Cody Christopher Cain and wife Donna Jensen Cain of McKinney; daughter Elizabeth Lynne Cain Feldt and husband David Feldt of Houston; sister Dixie Diane Thomas and husband Joseph Thomas of San Angelo; brother Randy Ray Garland of Iraan; grandchildren Christopher Austin Cain, 16, and Hannah Marie Cain, 14, of McKinney; and bonus grandchild Scott Feldt of Houston; as well as special friends Perry Flippin and Britt Towery of San Angelo and Gail Kregloe of Blacksburg, Virginia.

No visitation or memorial services are planned.

My condolences to Dusty's family. I always admired her as she was an upper-classman at IHS. Sympathy to Randy and Dixie and all of her family.

This morning my heart is sad at the news of Dusty's death. She was a part of our Iraan family and will always be remembered with much fondness. My prayer is that God will surround her family with much comfort and that His presence will provide much peace. Know that all of you will be on our hearts and minds in the coming days.
