JOHN BOYD Obituary

EDEN - Dr. John Hamilton Boyd, 76, of Eden died Monday, Sept. 2, 2001. Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Eden Funeral Home. Dr. Boyd was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Blue Creek to John Hamilton Boyd Sr. and Grace Elizabeth Smith Boyd. Dr. Boyd graduated from El Campo High School in 1940. He then attended Texas Lutheran College from 1940 to 1941; Texas Technological College from 1941 to 1942 and 1946 to 1949. He served in the United States Army Air Force from Oct. 26, 1942, to Feb. 13, 1946. Dr. Boyd graduated from Texas Technological College in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He also graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, Kirksville, Mo. Dr. Boyd had many awards granted to him throughout the years. One of those awards was the distinguished service award from the Texas Osteopathic Medical Assoc., issued in June 18, 1994. He held many offices including Wharton County health officer from 1963 to 1967; Briscoe County health officer from 1971 to 1974; Southern Pacific Lines local surgeon from 1955 to 1971; Eden city health authority from 1974 to 2001; Eden Detention Center medical director from 1987 to 1993; Texas Osteopathic Medical Assoc. house delegate from 1956 to 1972 and 1976 to 1977 and in 1988; vice speaker from 1966 to 1972; president from 1973 to 1974; Civil Aviation Medical Assoc. vice president from 1981 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1997; president from 1985 through 1987, Texas Institute for Medical Assessment chairman review committee from 1979 to 1981, president 1981 to 1983; Texas Medical Foundation member; Medical Directorate from 1976 to 1977; Wharton County Junior College Board of Trustees from 1961 to 1971; member of Local Board No. 129 Selective Service System from 1967 to 1971; member of Advisory Committee on Medical and Dental Education; Texas College and University System Coordinating Board from 1973 to 1974; Concho County Hospital Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1985; Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine professor from 1990 to 2001; member of the State Rural Medical Education Board from 1982 to 1984; member of the Quality Assurance Committee; Texas Medical Foundation member from 1984 to 1991; Board of Trustees from 1974 to 1977 and 1984 to 1991; member of the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners from 1987 to 1993; and secretary/treasurer from 1989 to 1993. He was a member of American Osteopathic Assoc. from 1955 to 2001; Texas Osteopathic Medical Assoc. from 1955 to 2001; Mensa, from 1965 to 2001; Civil Aviation Medical Association from 1972 to 2001; Aerospace Medical Assoc. from 1974 to 2001; Associate Fellow in 1993; Psi Sigma Alpha National Osteopathic Honor Society from 1952 to 2001; and medical director at Menard Manor from 1995 to 2001. Serving as pallbearers are six of his children, John Boyd, Robin Boyd, Robert Boyd, Teresa Krantman, Ann Maxwell and Melody Medders. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Boyd of Eden; seven children, John Hamilton Boyd III of Nuevo, Calif., James Robin Boyd of Bryan, Dr. Teresa Diane Krantman and Robert Boyd, both of San Antonio, Ann Maxwell of San Angelo, Deborah Carol Carrigan of Lubbock and Melody Sue Medders of Eden; one special niece, Janet Franklin of Abilene; one sister, Bess Hamlett of Sweeney; three brothers, Joe Boyd of Port Lavaca, Bob Boyd of Schulenburg and Bill Boyd of Kingsville; 15 grandchildren, Philip, Chris and Scott Boyd, Steven and Amy Jasper, Lance, Zeb and Jeremy Holt; Ashley and Terrence Medders; Kayla Krantman; Megan Boyd, Darrel and Danny Poore and Melanie Oaks; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Lance Boyd and Blake Jasper. He was preceded in death by one son, Alan Boyd; parents, John and Grace Boyd; one brother, Jimmy Boyd; and one sister, Jane Boswell. Dr. John Hamilton Boyd was very well loved and will be missed by many. The family requests that memorials be made to Eden EMS.
