Patrick Gibson Obituary

SAN ANGELO Patrick E. "Pat" Gibson, MD, passed into eternal life on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013. His was a life marked by boundless joy, contagious laughter, genuine compassion, abiding faith, and a deep-rooted love for his patients, his friends and his family. The mere mention of his wife, Alicia, or his twins, Jourdan and Clay would spark a smile that lit up the room and prompt him to whip out his phone to share their most recent photos and stories. Pat, who was born on Jan. 5, 1952 in Houston, was raised in Corsicana, Texas. He was the youngest of Dr. Louis E. and Betty Lou Gibson's four children. Medicine was in his blood. Pat got his first taste of the profession racing along East Texas highways in a low-slung sedan with his father, a respected general surgeon, at the wheel en route to medical emergencies. As a high school science fair project, Pat built a rudimentary pacemaker that kept a rabbit alive for an extended period of time, earning him top statewide honors in the International Engineering and Science Fair. Early on, Pat recognized that science and faith were not mutually exclusive, assisting his father with surgeries in the jungles of Ecuador as part of medical missions. Honoring the intersection of science and faith, Pat chose to attend Baylor University upon graduation from Corsicana High in 1970. At Baylor, he became a lifelong Bear fan and later, met Alicia, the love of his life, on her first day on campus in 1974. In 1980, Pat earned his M.D. from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Upon completing his surgical residency and a vascular fellowship in 1986, he moved to San Angelo and joined the staff of San Angelo Community Medical Center (SACMC) where he served as both director of Trauma and Chairman of the SACMC Board of Directors from 1995-2003. He continued to serve as a SACMC director until his passing. He was also the medical director for the local mammography program administered by the San Angelo campus of the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health. Described by colleagues as a physician with "hands for surgery and an exceptional heart for people," Pat was known by medical professionals and patients alike for his compassion, his empathy and his ability to connect with people from every walk of life. His quick wit and ready grin instantaneously turned strangers into friends. One of his signature moves was gifting people with nicknames that they proudly wore as badges of friendship. While medicine was definitely a priority, it was not his sole focus in the community. He was dedicated to making life better for those around him through art, education and increased business opportunities. Pat and Alicia strongly supported local art institutions, including the San Angelo Symphony, Angelo Civic Theatre and standalone cultural projects such as the Feast of Santa Angela. From first-hand experience, Pat knew that creativity has the power to change individual lives and communities. This passion for the arts can be traced, in part, to his paternal grandmother, Jewel Gibson, a noted Texas playwright. As a youngster, Gibson, along with his siblings and cousins, would perform original plays written for their family's entertainment. Later in life, the austerity of his white coat belied his status as the lead guitarist and singer for The Others, a classic rock n' roll band that he and his friends formed in high school. The group, which won the State Fair of Texas Battle of the Bands in the early 1970s, continued to perform together periodically. The Gibsons also joined forces for the community's greater good through the United Way and the San Angelo Schools Foundation. Pat also served as a director at Texas State Bank since 1993, director of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of then-U.S. Senator Phil Gramm's Rural Health Care Task Force. While Pat embraced life at full speed, he recharged his batteries in the great outdoors, pursuing his twin passions of hunting and fishing. In the wilds, he soaked up the majesty of nature and forged deep relationships with his fellow-outdoorsmen that spanned decades. Pat is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Alicia; his daughter Jourdan; his son Clay; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; and granddaughter Mary Carlisle; as well brother Dr. Mike Gibson and spouse Debbie of Dallas; sisters Nancy Hodges and spouse Larry of Bolivar, Mo., and Gail Clowe and spouse Don of San Antonio. Pat has six nieces and nephews, Cameron and Shannon Hodges, Duncan and Beth Clowe, and Lauren Bilboa and Ross Gibson. A public celebration of Pat's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 at the front entrance of the West Texas Medical Associates building located on Executive Drive. The Gibson family wishes to thank their extended family at West Texas Medical Associates and San Angelo Community Medical Center, and the entire community of San Angelo for their heartfelt support and outpouring of prayers. Memorial donations may be sent to the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health or the San Angelo arts or education organization of your choice. Family and friends may sign an online register book at johnsons-funeralhome.com.

Dear Alicia & family,

You and your family are in my prayers. I don't know if you remember me, but I met you at Baylor when you and Pat were first dating. We had lunch more than once together at Collins dining hall. Pat was my pledge captain in KA, and a friend. I'll never forget when I was pledging he let me stay (hide out) at his house one weekend. I was sick and needed to study, and avoid any possible harassment that comes with being a pledge. He was gone most of that weekend hunting or fishing and he gave me the run of the house and the fridge. I never forgot it. He was a good guy.

God bless you all.

Alicia & family,

I was very sorry to hear of Pat's death. I first met Pat at Baylor in the mid 1970's. He was always very upbeat, kind and supportive of underclassmen. I was fortunate to work with Pat later when I was in medical school in Dallas and Pat was a surgery resident there. He was very helpful to me and very suuportive of me in that setting as well. Although I had not seen him for many years, I have nothing but very fond and pleasant memories of him. He always managed to make every experience I had with him very positive. I can see from reading through messages posted here by others that he had a very similar effect on almost everyone he encountered. We will keep you and your family in our prayers.

I was the his 3rd Linx's procedure and feature in the newspaper and TV news with him. It was a very proud moment in my life to be a part of something so new and I trusted him. I was going to be the first case but I had to work until 7am that morning. He called me the workhorse to the newspaper reporter. I work on Med-Surg floor as night charge nurse. He always showed me respect and trusted my judgment that meant the world to me. I will pray for your family like Jourdan request. I never met Jourdan. I did meet Mrs. Gibson one night when I was working pediatrics several years ago. I believe it was doctor's Christmas party night and they came to see an admit. I met Clay when he was in college or just graduate high school. Dr. Gibson and Clay had been riding bikes than made rounds at the hospital. Prayer for your family and he will be missed by all of us.

I remember when Dr. Gibson came to San Angelo and became partners with Dr. Eddie Clemmons. Those were some of the best times and memories of my OR nursing career. I loved working with Dr. Gibson and hearing his stories. His nickname for me was Chuckles. I am truly saddened at his passing. He was a great man. I pray that that you will know God's presence and feel His love and grace during this time of sorrow and may you receive the peace beyond all understanding that is only through Him.

Dr. Gibson was a kind man that made working with him a pleasure. He was truly one of the few doctors that never had a harsh word for the nurses that called him at all hours regarding a pt. I remember him teasing me about giving him his TDAP vaccination so that he could head out to see his grandbaby. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, Alicia, Jourdan and Clay.

Oh I am so sorry to hear of this loss - I haven't seen Pat in many years. The last time was when I was a teenager and he was a 20 something young man - we were on a trip together with his parents, sister and family and my grandmother and others to Isreal. It was a great trip. One I have always cherished - but what I remember most was thinking what a cool dude he was and how much I wanted to be like him when I grew up. He had personality and kindness and he was always kind and nice to me - he made me feel important. Few people come into our lives that leave that kind of impact - that when years later you hear of their passing - your heart skip a beat and a tear forms - even for one you only knew by chance long ago. Impresisions sometimes last forever. My prayers to his family, always.

My daughter had a ruptured appendix in 1996 and she had developed peritonitis. We were blessed to have Dr. Gibson to perform her surgery. We will always feel that he saved her life and we have been so grateful to God since that time. He was a "miracle" surgeon/physician and had such a loving bedside manner. Thank you, Dr. Gibson, for what you did for us. May God bless and keep the family during this terrible time in your lives. You were blessed to have had him as a part of your lives.

My heart is saddened with the passing of Dr. Gibson. When I worked at SACMC, he always was eager to show me his hunting pictures just to torment me since I am an avid animal lover. I can still hear his voice asking me to look at his latest pictures and his awesome laugh when I told him I didn't want to look at them!! You, sir, will truly be missed. May God comfort your family during this extremely difficult time. My deepest sympathy to Gibson family. God bless you all.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family! I worked with Dr Gibson in the late 90s at Sacmc and he was such a kindhearted, compassionate, caring man. I remember the ski trip that he went on with other Physicians and their children and they all came back on crutches and in slings - he just laughed when he told the story that they were all clumsy and skiing might not have been the best Idea after all. His smile was contagious. He will be missed by all who knew him, our condolences to his wife, children and family!!

September 16, 2013

Pat was my fraternity brother, roommate, and close friend at Baylor in the early '70's. He was always upbeat, bright, and fun to be around. He was raised in a wonderful family, who I had the great pleasure of meeting at get togethers in Corsicana with older brother Mike and other future fraternity brothers. Just great people who instilled only the best of qualities in Pat, and which defined him for his entire life. The last time I saw Pat was in 2005, but I have no doubt that he was the same witty, positive, caring, generous person I had always known him to be. My heart and prayers go out to his loving family. He will be greatly missed. Goodbye, my friend.

Thank you God for giving us Dr. Gibson. He was a great surgeon, always upbeat, full of energy and life. His smile was contagious. May God comfort his family, his friends and this whole community. He touched so many lives. He saved my life. He walked into the ER and his confidence filled the room. He looked at me and said, "I know exactly where your hemorrhaging and were going to surgery now". I felt safe and thanked God for his being there. That was the first time we met. I will always remember Dr. Gibson. I feel deeply for his family.
