PAUL PATTERSON Obituary

CRANE - Paul Patterson, 98, of Crane passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008. The family will receive visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Crane. Burial will be in the Rankin Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Paul was born March 28, 1909, in Gaines County, Texas, to J.D. Patterson and Noda Pollard Patterson. After settling in Upton County, he graduated from Rankin High School. Paul received his B.A. from Sul Ross State University in 1935, and completed graduate work at the University of Texas, Utah State University, National University of Mexico, University of Madrid, the University of Buffalo, New York, and in Geneva, Switzerland. Paul proudly served his country in the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy during World War II as a cryptographer. Paul married Marjorie Mixon in 1941. They were married for 64 years and shared their love of teaching and traveling until her death in 2005. A teacher for over 40 years, "Mr. Pat" inspired and encouraged greatness in all of his students; most of whom remained devoted to him years later. The majority of his teaching career was spent in the Crane schools. He also taught in Marfa, Sanderson and Sierra Blanca. Upon retiring from their respective teaching careers, Paul and Marge divided their time between their homes in Crane and Pecos, enjoying their many friends in both communities. Paul's early experiences as a cowboy are responsible for his reputation as one of the foremost folk humorists in the United States. A renowned author, Paul entertained many with his incomparable storytelling ability and the sharp wit and humor found throughout his novels, poetry, articles and essays. As a featured speaker and teller of tall tales, Paul found himself with countless loyal followers who willingly honored him with many accolades and awards, including the Founders' Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock, Texas. Paul was humbled by the Distinguished Alumni Award he received from Sul Ross State University. He was a past president of the Texas Folklore Society and remained active in this organization until his passing. Paul Patterson is survived by his sister, Gwendolyn Patterson Shaw of Rankin, Texas; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Ralph Patterson, John Patterson and Fush Patterson; and two sisters, Blanche Patterson Holmes and Madge Patterson Howell. Paul's family would like to thank the employees of the nursing home in Crane for their love and devotion to Mr. Patterson. The family would also like to express their appreciation to Paul's loyal and devoted friends, who spent countless hours by his side.
