Susie Rubio Obituary

SAN ANGELO - Susie, our beloved mom, sister, grandmother, aunt and dear friend, was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010. She was born March 14, 1945, in San Angelo, Texas, to Paulita Martinez. Susie will be dearly missed by her many friends and the family she leaves behind. All who knew Susie will always remember her love of family and friends and the joy she shared with others through baking, cooking, and her outgoing spirit. Susie made many contributions to her community, beginning as an entrepreneur by establishing Susie's Scissors where she brought beauty to all. She progressed to being a cosmetology instructor at Lane's College of Cosmetology. Upon learning she had Type II diabetes, she established a bilingual diabetes support group at La Esperanza Clinic, which was instrumental in changing many lives. She was preceded in death by her mother, Paulita Martinez Ortiz; sister Isabel Ramos; and brother Hipolito "Polo" Varela. Survivors include son Richard "Dicky" Gutierrez, wife Randi, and children Andrew Bickford and Marinna Gutierrez, Raymond Gutierrez and children Miranda Saldivar, Alena and Monica Gutierrez; her son, Robert Gutierrez and life partner Tony Font; and her daughter Cynthia "Cindy" Montgomery and husband John. Susie has three great grandchildren: Micaela Saldivar, Jaiden Bryan, and Isabella Bickford. She is also survived by her brothers, Steve Varela, Joe Frank Varela, David Varela, and Johnny Ortiz; and her sisters Socorro Maldonado and Gracie Varela. A rosary will be recited in her honor at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Pallbearers are Johnny Ortiz, Cora Marquez, Tony Marquez, Tony Martinez, Chuy Martinez, Ricky Martinez, Mario Martinez and Martin Martinez. Our family would like to thank Dr Harvey and Dr Cornell and the staff at Shannon Medical Center for the tender care and support. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bilingual Diabetes Support Group at La Esperanza Clinic in San Angelo, Texas.
