Thomas Hughey Obituary
San Angelo
Thomas (Tom) Robert Hughey was born Aug. 19, 1930, to Thomas Wiley and Elizabeth Gladys Hughey in Van Nuys, California. Tom passed away on Feb. 4, 2017.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife Sally.
He is survived by his son, Geoff of New Braunfels; and daughter, Tracy of San Angelo; daughter-in-law, Kim Hughey; and grandchildren, Jessica, Ryan, and Cameron.
Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force on Jan. 3, 1951, and retired after 23 years. His duty stations included Wiesbaden, Germany; Hamilton AFB, California; Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Offutt AFB, Nebraska; U-Tapao AFB, Thailand; Hahn AFB, Germany, and Holloman AFB, New Mexico. While stationed in Wiesbaden Tom visited London, England and met Sarah (Sally) Gracie. They met again weeks later at Trafalgar Square and the romance quickly flourished. Tom and Sally were wed on March 5, 1955.
Prior to Tom's separation from the Air Force, He and Sally purchased a farm in Tularosa, New Mexico where they grew alfalfa, pecans, and apricots. In 1990 Tom and Sally moved to Dove Creek, near San Angelo, to be close to family.
Tom will be remembered for his gentle manner and boisterous laugh that would always identify him in a crowd. He loved to tinker in his garage turning useless equipment into unusual gadgets. He was a master at restoring old furniture into works of art. Tom was an avid oil painter of Southwest landscapes which are cherished by his family. He served as Treasurer for the Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nursing staff of the Lamon-Lusk-Sanchez Veteran's Home in Big Spring, TX and Home Hospice.
Funeral service will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church of Mertzon. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
